I pretty much ride my bike everywhere. I seldom walk anymore. I think I did one 2 mile walk since I got the new watch on Christmas. I always get over the 1 hour exercise without trying. but with the Snow in portland I have had to walk. each day I waked about 2 miles to the store. but my watch does not record that as exercise. even I record it as a outdoor walk I only get 6 or so minutes exercise. I used to get all my exercise daily on my apple watch before I had my bike just from walking. it catches my steps fine but so far it still only shows 6 minutes exercise at 1 pm. its like it does not put walking towards the exercise goal. it does not my wife's watch. is there a setting I am missing?

If you aren’t walking at a halfway decent pace, it won’t record it.
it did for my wife though. she got all the credit. I even used strava to record it. I used to get it just from working on my last apple watch. but she does not cycle every day right now like me. you cant move fast in the snow but it gets your heart rate up more. maybe I should use indoor walking. before I used to cycle I closed my rings without doing anything but working and walking.

There’s a heart rate threshold that you have to hit before it’ll be counted as exercise. I have a low HR — I have to really walk at a fast pace for a good while to get my HR up to the 100 range. My wife, however, has a naturally higher resting HR. She doesn’t need to get moving too fast before she gets high enough to count as exercise.

I have found in the past that if I have a heavy jacket, gloves or something pressing down in my Watch it doesn’t detect heart beat well and thus won’t give me exercise credit.

I used to wear a Buff on my left wrist over my Watch when in Europe to discourage thieves and would get 15 minutes of exercise walking for 8 hours a day.

yas I net that was it. though it was at but it shows when around 90 walking. but I see the problem the walk does not have a heart rate shown it was in power saving mode thats why.
