Apple today released updates for its Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Motion, Compressor, and Logic Pro software, introducing new features and optimizations. Apple announced the Final Cut Pro updates for iPad and Mac earlier this month and has now launched them.

Final Cut Pro on the Mac has been updated with organizational refinements like automatic timeline scrolling. Users will be able to keep their clips in view during playback, with the view able to be adjusted using keyboard shortcuts or the Zoom option.

The organization of the timeline is viewable at a glance, and it is easier to differentiate clips by assigned role using distinct colors. Apple also added tools for cleaning up complex timeline sections and fine tuning edits by combining overlapping connected clips into a single connected storyline.

On Apple silicon Macs, exporting projects in H.264 and HEVC is faster than before as Final Cut Pro is able to send video segments to available media engines for simultaneous processing.

On the iPad, the updated version of Final Cut Pro includes voiceover capabilities that let creators record narration and audio directly into the timeline with the iPad. In pro camera mode, stabilization now improves shaky footage for smoother video, and there are new options for combining connected clips. Editing is being sped up through new keyboard shortcuts for voiceover and grouping clips, plus there are new color-grading presets and titles.

iMovie and Compressor include the same file exporting optimizations on M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2 Max, M2 Ultra, and M3 Max machines. iMovie also includes new options for creating stereoscopic packages for the iTunes Store, and support for JSON and XML when batch exporting submissions using the command line.

Motion has improvements to the Object Tracker on Macs with Apple silicon, and for Logic Pro, Apple has added bug fixes.

Final Cut Pro for Mac is priced at $300, and Final Cut Pro for iPad is priced at $4.99 per month or $49 per year. Compressor and Motion for Mac are priced at $50 each, Logic Pro is $200, and iMovie is free.

Stopped using Logic since it doesn't work properly on my machine no matter what I try in troubleshooting. Something as simple as the entire timeline not showing movement in playhead or levels during playback. Anyone else see similar issues?

Why this article fails to mention the version number 10.7 for this update?

What OS are you on? I had major issues on Ventura. Went back down to Mojave and then now went to Sonoma with no issues. Ventura was just the worst.

Long time fcpx user here (10yrs). For my everyday video production, I am slowly moving towards capcut. The AI tools they have is just too convenient. FCPX have a long way to catch up for basic AI functionalities like generating subtitles and better denoising/tracking/masking. And they have almost no advanced AI features.

Overall fcps has almost come to a halt for the past few years, and dare I say after the initial release.. just adding some random tiny functions here and there, or the minimum support for new features on their devices like hdr/spatial videos/neural engine.

Also I don’t know if anyone uses the pro camera in fcpx on ipad. It feels wrong (?) to have the shooting steps integrated into the editing software. Makes project management a bit messier?

Personally if they don’t release a major version every other year to get money from the user base. I would be happy to see them release a fcp new version that’s subscription based.. they really need funding to hire people to update the software.

🤔 they just might lock more advanced AI features behind a subscription.

Time line scrolling is handy actually. What NEEDS TO BE FIXED is the fact that you can't see your audio waveform once you start scrolling around yourself. You have to wait for it to "draw" making it very difficult to edit based on waveform patterns. Maybe this auto scrolling addresses this? No other editor I've used has this issue. Why? Cause it's stupid.

I got a buddy who is a professional photographer and everyday he curses at Apple for discontinuing Aperture. He hates Lightroom so much but has no choice but to use it since he doesn't have Aperture anymore.
Yeah...I don't understand why they didn't just sell the code to Affinity or Pixelmator. My only guess was that they painted themselves in a box with the code and would have had to rebuild from scratch anyway (like they did with FCP and iPhoto).

I'm not a coder myself, but I suspect that happens a lot...which gives new apps an advantage from a feature standpoint, but forces experienced users to either remain productive and forgo the few features or sacrifice short-term productivity to learn another piece of software (which also means new workflows and difficulty converting older projects).

I'm experiencing this right now with Rapidweaver (for the second time). I'm rebuilding my website from scratch to be forward compatible with the latest frameworks...I feel like I'm running on a treadmill. But at least I'm not paying $700/year for Dreamweaver.

I never knew stereoscopic for iMovie was a thing. 🤷‍♂️

Glad to hear that Final Cut Pro is getting some much needed love. Hopefully they have optimized it for the soon to be released M3 Ultra Macs, in addition to the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max Macs.

Has he looked at DXO Photolab? I switched to it a few years ago from Lightroom and for my work, it’s been terrific.
