Apple today adjusted some of its Mac trade-in values, with some increasing and others decreasing depending on the model. These changes come just ahead of Apple's promised exciting week of Mac-related announcements, with the company expected to unveil new MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini models with the M4 family of chips.

Honestly.. who ever does that, a trade in? Those values are insanely low.

Agreed

I did it one time, several years ago now, and I've had over $500 trapped in Apple Gift Card value waiting for something to use it on

Equally frustrating is that I can't apply "just some of the gift card value" to my Apple account (to pay for iCloud). If I go to redeem it, it wants to take ALL of the GC value ... and I don't want more than $500 trapped in my Apple account like that.

Never again on Apple Trade-In

There’s definitely a convenience factor. Want to just come to the same store you’re buying your new laptop, not worry about wiping your device or other security issues? You can just bring your laptop and hand it to them.

I personally go for Craigslist and 50% more money, but apple trade in is easy to recommend for the technology incompetent

I'm a bit confused... I traded in my old base model 14" M1 Pro to Apple for $930 last year when getting my 16" 16/40 M3 Max. That was almost as much as the average on Swappa so I was happy to do it.

But now, Apple is going to offer me less to trade in a machine that is relatively one year newer and twice the cost?

Well so much for the new Macs getting a minimum of 16GB of RAM. They still are at 8GB of RAM, haha. :p

That's not what I'm reading. From their press release:

"Starting at just $1,299, now with 16GB of unified memory, the new iMac is available to pre-order today, with availability beginning Friday, November 8."

"The new iMac comes standard with 16GB of faster unified memory — configurable up to 32GB."

Couldn't you send it all to the apple account, have it chip away towards icloud, then when you buy something still use your apple account to pay a portion of your new item? Best of both worlds for your situation as I see it.

They are low if one bought specced out max models. Apple only adds incremental $20-$30 to trade in value when it comes to Macs - for example MBP 14 base ($2000) could fetch 765 and MBP 14 Max($4000-$6000) will fetch $845. They also disregard the storage size in Iphones. You need to know this quirks.

I have personally traded in iphones and also received tax deduction on sales tax - so the math would be Iphone trade in value $650 + $71.5 when replacing iphones. This makes me need to fetch $722 on the open market to match what apple gives me.

On another note I had my M1 Air laptop for 4 full years and bought it for $935. Apple was giving me 545,525,475,445 each time. So basically I am looking at losing $100 a year which is a fair deal in my book, which was warranted that i got it open box from bestbuy ($300) cheaper than retail in the first place.

You could - but never do that. I had $1000 in various gift cards so i consolidated them to my apple account. Why? Well because Apple said so: that I can use it whenever and however.

Long story short, i was not even able to use a penny towards hardware purchase. Funny enough icloud and apps were paid seamlessly but not the physical products. It took me 2 weeks of calling customer support with already researched info on what to ask, what to tell, whom to escalate.

After that, they gave 24 hours window to spend all my money on harware until next anti fraud lockup. I spent it all and promised to never carry a thing there.

Interesting. I thought that was the whole point of the apple account. Thank you for that. I don’t usually carry more than $100 or so on there at any one time and I have the premier apole one so that gets used pretty quickly.

Yeap, i then found out it is a bigger issue after researching the internet and finding thousands of people. Basically apple acting like the worst restaurant and tour deals: they lure you to buy gift cards but then the person will have the trouble redeeming it. Why? Because they already got your cash.

I also keep only $10-$50 gift cards on apple account, cause my monthly services will eaten that up easily from month to month.

I’m in the same boat. I’ve been adding gift cards and when it came time to buy my kids new laptops, I couldn’t use it. They couldn’t even tell me why I was locked; the website just would refuse to use the money. I managed to burn some of it on an iPad but now I’ve got $1100 in that account that’s waiting for the M4 laptops for me to try again.

Yeah you can obviously try again, just make sure to reserve account spending unlock from media&purchases team and get your 24-48hr shopping window activated. Or try to buy any single item for 1100 and ask to give you physical GC as a refund.

I did trade in i9 Intel Macbook pro after 3 years and got $850 which was worth it for my time and effort.

Very low trade-in prices. Better to sell elsewhere to get much better prices. Only benefit with Apple trade-in is the convenience offered.
