Apple this weekend has honored the life of late politician and civil rights leader John Lewis with a full-page tribute on its website. A photo of Lewis is accompanied by a quote of his: "Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble."

Apple CEO Tim Cook yesterday commemorated Lewis in a follow-up tweet.

I hope the people who labor, whether poorly paid or not paid, for Apple throughout the world can rise up as well.

John Lewis fought for economic rights, and Apple is one of the largest holders and distributors of capital in the world—capital it makes through a worldwide network of labor, nearly none of which it directly employs.

Lewis was a hero, and I’d be honored to have him as my congressman. More than that bridge should be renamed in his honor.

But please fix the Mail app, Apple. It still sucks, and you have lots of money.

Sadly, Lewis suffered from the same ailment as Steve Jobs (pancreatic cancer). I'm optimistic that the next couple of decades may deliver breakthroughs in solid tumor treatments, in particular around CAR T therapies. They can't come soon enough - both of these men should still be alive!

Rep. & Human Rights Freedom fighter John Lewis ...

1 of the Big Six of the Human Rights leaders

This video, some of faith may say 'God's Plan' (you may believe or not that's fine and not the point). It's just so uncanny that ... John Lewis at such an early age in life found his purpose to fight for the justice of human rights equality and throughout his life's struggles and efforts, all of that was aligned with his heart to find out it began with his great grandfather, first signing to vote 2 days after being allowed to:

When Lewis asked Obama to sign a commemorative photograph at his 2009 inauguration, the newly sworn-in president wrote: “Because of you, John.” } He lived to see the first African American President and awarded Medal of Freedom!

Served over 30 years in the House of Representatives for the state of Georgia

And nothing to mar or shame his passing either. I true hero.

I really don't like corporations holding up people like this and capitalising on their struggle, virtue signalling they are moral and on "right side of history" just like them. When they turn a blind eye to the working conditions of those in China who make these devices, silence over the treatment of people in HK, outsourcing their iCloud storage to Chinese state-owned companies and compromise on access. Which we know will result in human rights violations. It's easy to have a rainbow lanyard at WWDC than tell China "no" and jeopardize 15% of your revenue.

This is just whataboutism, which is not very brave or helpful.

Anybody has the right to praise John Lewis, and I encourage them to. Even Trump, who is a lying coward, a traitor to his country, and a woefully inadequate leader, ought to praise John Lewis. Even though Lewis pointed out that Trump is a racist, and even though he said that he didn’t see Trump as a legitimate President, Trump should lie and say that he respected John Lewis, just to set a good example.

I have to defend TheFluffyDuck here. Since it was on topic (human rights, equality) it can't be Whataboutism.

So according to you even Trump should be hypocrite (which he is anyway) and say he respects John Lewis (what he certainly doesn't do). That's just dishonest and morally questionable.

a man who did nothing but complain about the “corrupt and oppressive” system. He leeched off of the tax payers to live a good life and never passed significant legislation to benefit his state that has been in ruins since he started and did nothing to help it. But yeah, we’ll miss him.

You should boycott Apple. Never buy an Apple product ever again until they change their ways.

Tell me what has become of my rights
Am I invisible because you ignore me?
Your proclamation promised me free liberty, now
I'm tired of bein' the victim of shame
They're throwing me in a class with a bad name
I can't believe this is the land from which I came
You know I do really hate to say it
The government don't want to see
But if John Lewis was livin'
He wouldn't let this be

I bet you scream "swag bucks" in Fortnite.

John Lewis May have started off by standing for civil rights, but morphed into a crooked partisan left-wing extremist Democrat who did nothing for the country. He backed the phoney Russian collusion witch hunt lie which tried to cancel the votes of millions of Americans who voted for a duly elected president. For many, he will not be missed in Congress.

Tim Cook and Apple should stay out of politics and sell great products. Not everyone is a pro-homosexual left-wing extremist.

It's only 7:15 AM here and I'm already 100% certain this will be the most ignorant thing I read all day.

He didn't "start off" standing for civil rights, it was his core motivation for his entire career. To say he did nothing for his country is laughable and the very definition of hyperbole. Your either too young to know your history or too "in your bubble" to have perspective. He continued to fight for voter rights, welfare reform and privacy rights throughout his days in office. Just because you may not have been a beneficiary of some of his efforts, doesn't mean he contributed nothing to his country. Highlighting the Russian collusion issue just exemplifies that you can't help but be partisan even as someone passes. I feel he will be missed for his efforts and contributions to this country much more than you will and for that we can all be thankful.

If you have the right to voice your nonsensical opinion then so does he. If you don't like what he's saying then put your money where your mouth is and boycott Apple. He knows what he's saying and knows it may potentially alienate those with sensitive sensibilities, he's fine with it and as a shareholder, so am I.

You, like many here, live in a group-think Democrat left-wing bubble. Any intellectual diversity is immediately shut down and will not be tolerated. Very hypocritical. I firmly stand by what I wrote.

Does anyone in the USA and elsewhere understand that if you are a CEO of a big company your only (and of course legitimate) business is to make a ******** of money for your investors and nothing else? and guess what? Investors' interests conflict with normal workers' one. Because the rights that people with family and kids need are (and, of course, I'm not talking about the USA citizens only):

- The right to earn enough to get a loan.
- The right to afford something else than junk food every day.
- The right to have time to spend with their families.
- The right to have a good education.
- The right to have affordable health care.

So why Tim you always offer those boring "CIVIL RIGHTS"?

The answer is obvious and only dumb people don't understand:

CIVIL RIGHTS COST NOTHING TO COMPANIES

So Tim, what's you "next" civil right you are willing to fight for?
Last time it was the right to privacy, and I like it, really! but I have a little suspicious that you are pushing it because this right is well fulfilled with your products, like the iPhone. Am I wrong?
I enjoy this right you gave me Tim, I paid for it! because my iPhone was not free, but I'm happy anyway. Maybe your concept of "fighting for rights" means "make a wire transfer to Apple to get a device who fulfills the right that TIM fought so hard for".

What will be next right Tim?

- The right to have a stable internet connection?
- The right to have at least 20Gbyte of mobile traffic data every month?
- The right to marry my dog and take a good picture of our marriage?
- The right to wear slippers at my working desk?
- The right to enter in Apple store barefoot?
- The right to have an Apple store genius explain to my cat how to use an Apple Watch I'm buying for him?

I REPEAT TO YOU TIM:

Step down as CEO and you will be more credible when you talk about politics otherwise you are just a clown.

Like I said — sensitive. Saying those that don't agree with you are in "a group-think Democrat left-wing bubble" rather than me actually living long enough to remember everything he has done for this country and for the people of Georgia, just shows you care less about the topic and more about playing talking-point bingo against someone you think is on another team. I know your ilk... those who speak out in a hyperbolic manner meant to offend, only to themselves be offended when someone disagrees. Hiding behind the "right to express an opinion", only to try and castigate anyone who responds with a differing opinion, claiming they are sheep when it is your weak constitution that is the real issue.

Any intellectual diversity is immediately shut down and will not be tolerated. Very hypocritical.
Not in the least — they just need to be grounded in reality, which that was not. You can say you didn't like him, you can say you didn't agree with him, but to say he did nothing for his country is an outstanding lie that furtherer reinforces your partisanship.

Also, I'm not a democrat, nor do I live in any "left-wing bubble" (though it is very mature for you to just repeat what I said to you, back) so how many times do you want to be wrong today?

For sure on that. But trump is a narcissistic racist lacking even one iota of empathy. He only performs acts that stir up his base for the upcoming reelection. It's always all about him.

Great that Apple is recognising this.
Very good and sad times at the same time.

60 years of activism. I tip my hat deeply to John Lewis, always fighting the good fight. He'll be missed.
