Apple Announces iMovie for iPhone 4

Along with the announcement of the new iPhone 4 at today's WWDC keynote event, Steve Jobs announced iMovie for iPhone 4. The new app will allow users to edit videos right on the new iPhone 4, which records 720p HD video at 30fps.

Randy Ubillos, Apple's Chief Architech of Video Applications, came on stage to give a demo of the iMovie app. The app works very similarly to the desktop version of iMovie. It offers transitions, titles, and five themes. Editing is done in a timeline view and new clips and photos can be added anywhere in the timeline. Music from the iPod library can be added. With certain themes iMovie for iPhone uses the geolocation information recorded by the camera. Movies can be exported at 360p, 540p, or 720p.

The new iMovie app will cost $4.99, though the exact date of its availability was not announced.

Please Apple, spend your resources making Final Cut Pro better, ala new interface which hasn't changed since version 1! This iMovie for iPhone is a very stupid idea! :mad:

Agreed.

GREAT, now I can clumsily edit a movie on an iphone. AWESOME.

All the while, FCP continues to fall behind other pro editing applications.

I just hope Apple does not forsake their creative-pro consumer base that helped apple get back it's legs.

PS. HD Video on iphone is pretty awesome.

PPS I bet the next iteration of FCP gets a name change.... iMovie Pro anyone?

I don't care at all to edit videos on the phone but I am happy for HD video recording on the phone, sweet!

Well, on the iPad it would be awesome do make some video editing with videos you import from the Mac.

On the iPhone it's cool with the videocamera, but an iMovie app on the iPad could be really more similar to the iMovie Mac version.
 
The next time somebody happens to be in the right place at the right time to capture a news event live and they upload their video to YouTube within seconds of the event, I expect it to have elegant titles, transitions, and music accompaniment.

I agree...nice app i guess...but if your video is important enough to edit with transitions and such i simply don't think many people are going to edit it on their phone.

aGREED. The whole time they were showing this, I thought, "Man... the moment all this stuff goes into an iPad, I'M SO THERE." My suspicion is that the iPad will pile out with features later this year after the world gets used to the low cost starter model. Within 2 years I suspect the iPad will become a truly incredible and versatile mobile computer.

Hope they bring the hi-res type screen to iPad so we get the res. of a huge monitor on the little hand held. Not sure about the tech limitation, though.

Engadget at least sounded very impressed with the video quality.

I'm guessing Apple didn't just half ass their HD camera quality. Cause the Evo's is VERY compressed.

Shame.
 
Hey geniuses, this is obviously meant to make quick edits to those random 30 second videos people take on their phones and not meant for the professional market. I get that you wanna bitch about the lack of attention FCP has been getting, but to be able to record HD video on a phone, make quick fun edits, and upload is nothing short of freakin' sweet.
 
This is cool news. I am not worried about FCP yet, as we all know a new version is in the works. All I have to say it that it better be multi-core aware.

I'm wondering if this isn't done on the "cloud" - although he didn't mention a Mobile Me requirement. The exporting itself would be the one thing that would take awhile - might make more sense to offload this to your Mac.

But I, for one, would love the opportunity to try to edit video on my iPad. The multi-touch interface would be great for arranging clips, audio, etc. Too small on the iPhone though.

I can see some very precise adjustments, cc and cropping done with your
fat fingers on the greasy screen...

People like you keep asking for that sh$t and Jobs is listening.
When we want a Mac Pro upgrade and FCP which can keep up with
the competition - we get iMovie for iPhone...
Sounds like a joke, but it's not...

What a letdown, word "mac" wasn't used once today.

The bigger screen would be great for the interface, sure. But it's not really as practical considering the idea is that you shoot video and then edit it all right on the device.

Maybe the iPad 2 will have it.
