At its WWDC keynote today, Apple confirmed that Siri would be coming to the Mac with macOS Sierra. Siri's icon will sit in the top menu bar next to the Notification Center toggle.

Siri can handle context-sensitive searches for things such as files, allowing users to search for files they worked on in the last week or just the files an individual co-worker sent a user. Siri for Mac, which can also work while a user is in a full-screen app, can search the web. Siri's web searches can also be pinned to the Notification Center.

Like Siri for iOS, Siri for Mac can also be used to bring up music, send text messages and open apps. Siri can also be used in conjunction with other new macOS Sierra features, like the updated Continuity and Apple Pay.

In terms of a feature release, this is only barely more exciting than El Capitan, at least for me.
Agreed, there aren't a lot of new features, and from the sound of it there wasn't much more than normal in speed and stability improvements either. I think Apple really should lengthen their cycle to at least two years for macOS.

Unless there are some major improvements that they haven't shown off, I guess that makes clear Apple has stop giving a f*** about the the Mac.

I absolutly, categorically do not care, interrest or have any use for siri on my mac. Auto unlock? I unlock the mac once a day, and it has never been difficoult or time consuming. This is totally uninterresting being a content provider (music), Where is speed enhancement, etc, the mac is not an ipad... Icloud... Meeh apple watch, emojis waaaaa

I guess this is nice for the people who have been asking for it, I'm still not sold on it being a useful thing on a computer.

You can now ask your computer to show you images of a _____ and drag a result from the search window into your project. If that was the only thing Siri did on the Mac it'd be worth it, but that's one feature. And it'll improve every year. I suspect in five years time you'll feel you wouldn't be able to live with Siri on macOS.

"Show me photos from that trip we took to Mexico last year..."

"Show me all the work files I created last week..."

"Skype Mom..."

In fact, call your Mom.

See all her smart alec comments when her request was finished? That will get old quick.
I instantly had the exact same thought during the demo.

Siri won't be useful on the Mac until you can freely make requests of her while doing other things. Right now, she demands too much mental acuity and attention; if you're doing Siri then you're not doing anything else.

By comparison, I can haphazardly browse a file system looking for things I need while simultaneously collecting my thoughts on the task at hand.

Keynote really shows how the Mac how low on the ladder macOS is compared to iOS.

And that really is a tragedy considering how much better it is. macOS is a great OS, while iOS is years behind Android, with each year just playing catchup.

It's hard to improve on perfection. But seriously, Unix is 47 years old, all of the major things have already been implemented. What more do you expect them to do?

Hey Siri, we have a warrant to search this users Macbook.

Siri: I can help with that. Would you like me to analyze this users Photos library "in context."

That'd be swell, thanks.

[that's 50% satirical]

Yeah, the new auto unlock has me worried because it could entirely circumvent drive encryption. A court doesn't have the power to compel you to reveal a password that is stored in your head because the 5th amendment protects you from self incrimination. However, this same protection does not apply to physical objects, so a court could compel you to wear your watch to unlock your computer so they can access the encrypted drive.

Next year, if I see someone running on a Mac giving a presentation, I will yell out "Siri, show me what photos I looked at this week."

Based on the demo that I've seen I don't think Siri is always listening, you have to activate her by clicking on the icon or presumably pressing the Siri key on the keyboard or gesturing to her with the touchpad. If she was always listening your computer would never go to sleep.
