Apple has announced that "Tap to Pay on iPhone" is available in Canada starting today through select payment platforms in the country.

Tap to Pay on iPhone allows businesses to accept contactless payments on an iPhone, with no additional point-of-sale hardware like a Square Terminal required. The feature allows customers to pay by simply tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch, contactless credit card or debit card, or other contactless payment option on the merchant's iPhone. Payment is securely completed using the same NFC technology behind Apple Pay.

Businesses in Canada can offer Tap to Pay on iPhone through iPhone apps offered by Adyen, Moneris, Stripe, and Square. In the coming months, Apple said Aurus, Chase, Fiserv, and Helcim will also offer the feature in the country.

Apple said Tap to Pay on iPhone will be available at Apple Store locations across Canada, and at merchants such as Sephora, later this year.

Launched in 2022, Tap to Pay on iPhone is also available in the U.S., Australia, Brazil, France, Japan, the Netherlands, Taiwan, the U.K., and Ukraine.

With Goldman looking to exit the business I doubt any Apple Card expansion happens until Apple determines where everything ends up.
Apple would have to find additional partners to expand credit card offerings outside of the US anyway; Goldman Sachs is primarily only an investment bank overseas. Investment banks typically don't (or can't, depending on local regulations) lend money directly to consumers or businesses unless they set up an actual retail bank subsidiary. Goldman has a banking subsidiary in the US but I don't believe it operates elsewhere.

Oh agreed, it's just that I'm not sure Apple won't just be discontinuing the card outright if they can't find a partner - if that happens there wouldn't be any overseas expansion.

As much as I am happy for this to come to Canada, I wonder how this is implemented already in the US. The iPhone is a very "personal" device and I'm curious how shop owners like a convenience store would address this. An iPhone reserved just for Tap to Pay ? Needs to be plugged in to be sure that it has enough battery?

If anybody can get away with this, it's going to be Apple. Genuinely interested to see what they come up with.

"We call it ExtendaDisplay and you're gonna love it. It folds just like you do. And it has no crease, just like you don't."

The fact that almost every major US bank/card issuer declined Apple's proposal before Goldman signed on doesn't bode well for future partnerships. We'll see if the AMEX rumors come true!

Sephora and other stores use company issued iPhones. These phones aren’t just for taking payments but rather they run a multitude of apps for inventory, clocking in and out, interior communications etc.

They are docked in the office, and you pick one up off the dock when you show up to work, put it back on the dock for others to use when you clock out. They’re managed by an MDM so you can’t just steal one and take it home, it literally wouldn’t work.

I work in the US but live in Canada when I’m able to work remotely. I have an Apple Card saved to my phone that taps just fine in the US and Canada and always has. Is this something different?

Still waiting for a replacement for Interac; not that it's that hard to use, but just tapping phones to transfer money would be nice between users.
That’s not what Interac is. You’re thinking email transfers via Interac.
Interac is the foundation of our entire debit transactions infrastructure in Canada and that’s not getting replaced, nor does it need to be. I could see direct transfers getting added to email and text but honestly, I’d rather just get Apple Cash in Canada.

This hasn’t been available in Canada??

People seem to be confusing ApplePay and/or contactless payments. You’ve been able to do this for years. This new feature allows iPhones to receive payments via tap. So a hotdog stand could accept your Apple Pay payment with you tapping on their iPhone to charge you. Previously, they had to get a Square terminal or something like it to accept payments. Now, it’ll all work on their iPhone alone.

Good to see it launch in yet another country. Waiting for its availability to expand.

So will there be a service charge that’s different from using a Square Terminal?
