I know the plugin Hydra is available for automatically creating HDR images in Aperture. Is there a step by step guide somewhere on how to use the 3 raw files to make an HDR image without using any plugins or extra software on top of Apple Aperture?

On it's own, with no plugins or extra software like Photoshop it's not possible to combine images in any way at all in Aperture...
I use PhotoMatix as an external editor. Hydra is just terrible in comparison. Its not as nice as using it as a plugin but it gets the job done. Now they just need to make it a plugin and we will be set.
