Apple today updated its Apple Arcade gaming service with several new titles, including Disney Dreamlight Valley, Sonic Dream Team, Puzzle & Dragons Story, and Turmoil+.

apple-arcade-orange-feature.jpg

Disney Dreamlight Valley is a life simulation game starring Disney characters, and it has previously been available on console platforms. The Apple Arcade version of the game includes the base version and the A Rift in Time expansion that is a paid option on other platforms.

Compared to other versions of the game, the Apple Arcade version does not have in-app purchases and thus does not include Star Path seasons or the Premium Shop.

Sonic Dream Team is a racing game that stars popular Sonic characters, while Puzzle & Dragons Story is an RPG adventure match-3 game. Turmoil+ is an oil rush simulation game that tasks players with digging oil to make money and grow the nearby town.

Many of these games were announced back in November following the October price increase to the Apple Arcade service. Apple Arcade now costs $6.99 per month in the United States, up from $4.99 per month. Apple Arcade games are free from all in-app purchases and ads.

Seems like Dreamlight Valley may not be the smash success Disney was hoping it would be.

Dreamlight valley is basically Disney’s version of animal crossing, but it’s too complicated to start off and I think is really why it didn’t take off as well as animal crossing did.

Every now and then i scan through the arcade store as its included in my subscription. I think I have downloaded and tried a couple of games, and forgot about them a few days later. I suppose the bundling strategy is quite effective.

I forget that Apple Arcade even exists. Every 6 months I review what's available and find nothing.
YMMV. I enjoyed my free trial of it, but I ended up cancelling my sub to it b/c I found alternatives on Android, and non-AA iOS at that time. I was later gifted a Switch, and my free time that was in AA would be diverted there. Otherwise, my favorite games on there included Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls, SP!NG, and Rayman Mini.

Another issue was my free trial of Apple TV+ was concurrent, and I had to juggle between the 2. Not impossible, but it would've been more effective to alternate them.

To be fair Animal Crossing took off because of the pandemic. It was the perfect game at the perfect time.

FYI, the fine print in the game's description has a list of devices that are NOT supported...
Disney Dreamlight Valley Arcade Edition is not supported on iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone SE (2020), Apple iPad mini (2019), Apple iPad Air (2019), Apple iPad 10.2 (2020), Apple iPad 10.2 (2021), Apple TV 4k 1st Gen, Apple TV 4k 2nd Gen, Apple TV HD, Apple TV 1st Gen, Apple TV 2nd Gen, Apple TV 3rd Gen, or Intel-based Mac devices.
... I'm not on AA anymore, but still bummed to see my 9th gen iPad (10.2, 2021) is on that "not supported" list. Oh well!

Finished Sonic Dream Team last night. Surprised Apple didnt go harder on promoting it themselves since it's the closest thing to a full "console" game they've actually funded. It's a really fun time.
How long does it last though, since you finished it last night when it was released, maybe a couple of hours? That’s far from a full console game.

thats why I said "closest thing"
it took me a little over 4 hours but theres a bunch of side missions and stuff to keep you busy longer. you could definitely speed through it in less if you wanted to though.

probably more fair to compare it to a 3DS/Vita game or something, either way it plays smoothly and is visually nice. It's not a city builder/3 lane auto runner/etc, just a standard free roam 3D platformer that plays like you would expect it to. just makes me think of the potential for bigger games if Apple is willing to put more money into them.

Animal Crossing has always been big when one comes out, NH was just the most successful one due to covid. New Leaf was the 6th best selling 3DS game, and Wild World was the 9th best selling for the DS. New Leaf was also the first to 2 million in Japan.

Many people bought a 3DS and later a switch JUST to play Animal Crossing. It's one of the few console games that can be picked up easily by people who have never played a video game in their life. How companies with infinite money can't replicate that on a device type almost everyone on the planet owns is beyond me. Imo, the biggest reason attempts to eat Animal Crossing's lunch always fail is that they make it too complicated to onboard. They have the tutorials down to a science with AC at this point, NH eases you in very well from the perspective of someone who has never played a video game, the only thing it fails to tell you about is how to run.

I'd argue Fantasian is a full console experience, perhaps Beyond a Steel Sky as well.

Maybe New Horizons, but the GameCube one was a runaway success. The Wii one was also great, and a few others scattered here and there pretty much rode on the coattails of the original few’s success. I will say though that I almost bought a switch just for that game. It’s fantastic.

What’s the definition of full console game, though?
They have (had) games on there that were released on consoles just as they are. The Last Campfire, The Pathless, Little Orpheus… I’m sure there are more.

I’m not attacking you, mind you.
It’s more that I’m wondering about what Apple decides to promote and what not to promote myself.
Those are not HUGE titles but I doubt we’ll see “AAA” console titles on Arcade any time soon - which I’m sure they would promote.

…the definition of “AAA” would be another story then.

Well, then you’re simply not the target audience. Which is, of course, perfectly fine.

Personally, as someone interested in smaller, “indie” sort of games, I found a number of very enjoyable games on Arcade.
The fact that I don’t play often or for long, however, still made me drop the subscription as an unnecessary cost.

I like the concept of small games, which I can grasp in a short time and play when having some minutes e.g. while traveling. Because of this I had Apple Arcade subscribed but played very seldom. After the price increase I canceled the subscription because I wont spend more than 80 EUR a year on a subscription I use maybe 3 or for times in this year.

Dreamlight Valley is a fantastic game to play with my kid. We have spent countless hours going through the game, and Disney is constantly updating the game with additional characters and stories. They also just added their add-on pack to the consoles for $30. I think the game is doing fine. Check out the Dreamlight Valley subreddit and you'll find a ton of community activity.

Shocked to find that not only does my 2019 Macbook Air run Sonic Dream team, it does it fairly smoothly.

Years have gone by since the Apple Arcade launch.
And I have admittedly not been paying attention 🙄.

Does it have, say, 10 games that makes it worth every penny now? Which?
