The Label's
apple-arcade-the-otherside.jpg
"The_Otherside" is this week's addition to Apple Arcade on the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. The game is described as both a turn-based RPG and a strategy board game:
Otherside is a turn based RPG and strategy board game where you will control four survivors who hope to push back the shadowy threat. Make your way through each level solving puzzles, fighting monsters, and destroying the spirit anchors that threaten our dimension.

Do you have what it takes to restore the town back to normal and save the day?
"The_Otherside" is available on the App Store with an Apple Arcade subscription. The service provides iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac users with access to over 100 games with no in-app purchases or ads for $4.99 per month.

Anyone have any idea how much play value there is in this? This sounds great, but I don't want to subscribe if it's not that great.

How much enjoyment can you expect for $4.99?

IMHO arcade is a must subscribe. There are a good chunk of RPGs and adventure games that are worth it, then cancel when you have gone through them. Doubles the value when you take advantage of playing on apple tv or mac for games that are better suited for those platforms all included (i.e. mouse or gamepad)

Mostly I'm wondering if this is one 20 minute playthrough, or if each game is longer than that. Or if one game is hours.

But, to answer your question -- I'm happy if it's 1 hour.

Do the free trial and see. I've been enjoying Arcade a lot more than I expected.

I actually ended my arcade subscription a month or two ago. I'd played through all the games I was interested in. Of course, now one pops up that sounds interesting :)

There are some artistic pieces like Mosaic, deep, Zelda like RPG's like Oceanhorn 2, fun but extensive casual games like What the Golf, mistery puzzle solving ones like Discolored, exciting racing titles like Super Impossible, all of which have outstanding quality, no in-app transactions or advertisements, and are well worth 4.99 by themselves. I would say, you can find about 10% of games in the catalog are worth 9.99 or more, 40% around 4.99, and about 50% worth 0.99.

Now there's a quality threshold in the sense that even if the genre or style of a specific game might not be your cup of tea, none of the games in Arcade are crap, they are well-made, even if at times simple, experiences. Yes, sans a couple exceptions, these are not full blown AAA $60 titles. Then again, this service costs 4.99 a month for dozens of very inmersive titles.

PRO TIP: If you dont own a compatible gamepad yet, do buy yourself a dualshock or an xbox controller, also, if you dont own an Apple TV, with an adaptor you can hook your iPhone or iPad to your TV and with the gamepad you got yourself a game console. There are games outside of Apple Arcade, like Real Racing 3 and Fortnite which can be play hooked up to a TV and with a gamepad as well.

For me Apple Arcade pushed me to buy a Dualshock 4 controller, and after a few years off Im back to gaming again.

Oceanhorn 2 is still the only one that has appealed to me and the ending was super disappointing... now I'm taking my money and subscribing to Nvidia Geforce and playing Witcher 3 on my Apple TV with an xbox controller and realizing how great full fledged games are lol

What apparatchik said. It's $5/month. I drop that on a soda in when I'm out in the world. There's not a huge amount of risk involved if you hate it, but the upside is huge. I've been put off of mobile gaming by the cancer that is in-app purchases. I know that developers need to eat, but too many games rely on you spending money to make progress and you have to pay to play or be force-fed ads every 10 seconds.

Arcade has none of that crap. You pick up and play and you can try a bunch of games for $60/year. I'll take that deal every day of the week.

Yeah I could definitely see how the service wouldn't be for everyone.

I echo what apparatchik said about using a controller/gamepad with this. I use my PS4 controller with the games that support it, and it's amazing.

If you pair your PS4 controller with your iPad (or whatever iOS device), does it still also work with your playstation when you turn that on? Or would you have to pair it back to the PS4 to use it there (and suffer an annoying back-n-forth re-pairing forever)?

I don’t own a PS4, but I use a DualShock 4 Controller on my Mac and my iPhone, (I use Geforce Now on the Mac, Apple Arcade on the iPhone) and I have to re-pair it every time I switch between them (which for me is about once a week, I usually use Geforce Now on the weekends). I suppose it would be the same between a PS4 and an iOS device.

Yeah the ending seemed like they were 3/4 done with the game, and Apple pushed them to have it out in time for the Arcade launch.

Agreed. It’s a no brained for 4.99 a month

Unfortunately, yes. You have to attach the mini USB to USB-A cable to the controller and then connect it to the PlayStation and press the PS button on the controller. I guess it's a similar thing with the Xbox Controller, but I think it can be done wirelessly there.

Just watched the trailor video and cancelled the download. I’m really not a fan of the virtual dice and virtual cards that seem so popular these days (not to mention virtual loot boxes made to look like actual boxes). Reminds me of the skeuomorph of iOS of old. Just be honest to the medium guys!

Yet strangely I quite like the aesthetic of making games look like little models as seen in the recent Link’s Awakening remake on Switch. I’m weird.

So actually maybe I should start the download again, who knows? Maybe I’ll like it!

that cat rpg is really good. Cant remember its name
CatQuest II. There are soo many party games and indie gems in Apple Arcade, I'm having a lot of fun considering the little time I have.

Really there some greats games in Apple Arcade, I've had one of the nest nerd evening/nights with my friends playing all together with 4 controllers.

Yes you have to re-pair to the Xbox too, but you do not have to attach any cables to do it...... The most annoying thing for me is that when I want to use the controller on an iOS device, it turns the Xbox on when I turn the controller on, as it is still paired to the Xbox. I can’t think of a way around this except going to a far corner of my house out of range of the Xbox to pair it to the iOS device before the Xbox catches it lol.
