Apple today added Mac Studio models with M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips to its online certified refurbished store in the United States, Canada, Japan, Singapore, and many European countries, for the first time since they were released in March.

As usual for refurbished Macs, prices are discounted by approximately 15% compared to the equivalent new models on Apple's online store. Note that Apple's refurbished inventory fluctuates often, so check back often for certain configurations.

In the U.S., refurbished M4 Max configurations starts at $1,699, down from $1,999. The refurbished M3 Ultra configurations start at $3,399, down from $3,999.

Apple has yet to make refurbished MacBook Air models with the M4 chip available anywhere.

The refurbished Mac Studio models ship in a plainer box. Beyond that difference, we consider Apple's refurbished Macs to be virtually indistinguishable from brand new ones, providing a good opportunity for savings directly from Apple. However, you can often find better deals on Macs through resellers like Amazon.

Apple says it puts refurbished Macs through "full functionality testing" and a "thorough cleaning process and inspection," and they are covered by Apple's one-year limited warranty and eligible for extended AppleCare+ coverage.

Looks like there are some big differences between what they charge for the same model. Dug deeper, yup there are differences in storage and RAM that accounts for the price differential. It ALSO looks like one can actually choose the config one wants?

So...these are the units returned by YouTubers who produced a few quick benchmarking videos, then had no other need for them and returned them for full credit?

I mean...I can't think of any other reason to return a Mac Studio...unless you mistakenly bought the wrong configuration.

The Apple refurbished store charges based on the configuration. If they don't have the configuration that you desire, keep periodically checking. When I purchase, I generally purchase Apple store refurbished and the longest it took to find the configuration I wanted was a few weeks. Just be prepared to check often and jump on it immediately when you find what you want.

Education pricing on new can sometimes be a better buy if it applies to you.

Who cares, the rest of us benefit.
Good point - and Apple benefits from all the YouTube exposure - at a cost of a mere few hundred dollars. So...win/win/win.

Regardless...Marketing in the 'influencer world' has truly gotten weird to us older folks...so much of it feels more like 1925 hucksterism rather than what was taught in business schools just a few years ago (features v benefits, the 4 P's, branding).

Nice to know that these models are available. But better to check whether there are any offers on the new ones at 3rd party retailers before purchasing a refurbished one.

There could be number of other reasons including the ever traditional buyer's regret, perceived issues that really don't exist, threats of spousal reprisals for spending the money, etc. 😇

I think that some people order multiple systems / configurations from Apple. They decide not to the one they like and return the rest.

US $3400 for an M3 Ultra from the US Education Refurbished site is a fantastic deal, it’s just that I can’t justify buying one under any circumstance. Way overkill for my use case. Unfortunately, owning an LG 34” 5K2K Ultrawide monitor means I’m subject to the M4 bug with those monitors, so I can’t grab the cheaper refurb M4 Max Mac Studios or M4-based Mac minis, either. Le sigh … 😞

A returb'd M4 Max Mac Studio for $1700 seems like a great deal.

A pity I see no evidence that these are actually available yet... Did they all sell out already?

Looking at the M4 16/40 combinations, the prices are (oddly) pretty good, better than the new EDU prices. 128GB/1TB combo is $3,139, which is significantly less than the regular new price.
