Does anyone remember when Apple made laser printers? I seem to recall owning one way back in the early 90s. Thing was like a tank, lasted for years. Would be nice if Apple returned to that market. So many of these HP and Brother printers just don't have a good interface with Macs.

Second part to this statement: I need to buy a heavy-duty dual tray laser monochrome printer, but all the usual candidates seem to have problems interfacing with iMacs (for example, auto switching between letter and legal). Anybody have any recommendations for a printer that works well out of the box with Apple?

If Apple released a laser printer that was priced for the home market, I would probably buy it immediately. I don’t see them ever doing this because it would require tons of R&D and that would drive the cost above existing models out there. It would never get enough volume of sales to bring the price down.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any experience with dual tray laser printers. I have a small single tray HP AIO printer that is perfect for my occasional printing needs, but it sounds like you need something more in the home office category. My advice was would be to look up tons of reviews and buy one from the store that accepts returns.

Fearless prediction:
Apple's days of selling printers are over. They won't be coming back.

Having said that...
If you need a laser printer, I have one word for you:
"Brother"...

HP makes more than a few dual-tray laser printers, and in my experience, they work great out of the box with no HP software installed at all. Sometimes the actual printer driver needs to be installed, but none of the extra printer software is necessary. For the most part, macOS handles things like dual trays, dual-sided printing, etc. just fine on its own.
