I'm new to Apple Care and just purchased a new iPhone 12 Pro Max. If I scratched up the screen, or broke the screen, would I have to leave the phone with Apple for repair? How long would I be without a phone? During this pandemic, it doesn't seem that the store is equipped for immediate repair. Wondering if I wasted my money. I also just ordered a screen protector.

Pre pandemic you would make a appointment and leave the phone with them for about two to three hours.

Also, a scratched screen is not covered under AppleCare+, as it is considered cosmetic wear and tear. A broken screen is covered (once you pay the deductible).

So in other words, just smack the phone on the counter real quick if the scratches bother you that much.

Extra force needed this year with the ceramic shield. Drop tests from reviewers are quite impressive.
