My switch to Mac in 2001 was a wonderful experience. I purchased an ibook G3 and it worked great... well except for that famous logic board issue. My machine was sent in 4 times for repairs and as my previous Applecare expired, replaced with an ibook G4. So I am happy and Apple has come through. With the new machine I am able to purchase Applecare again and have 1 year to decide (like all new Apple purchases).

Here is the warning: keep track of when your year is up. I never heard from Apple again regarding my option to purchase Applecare. I called today and it expires Sunday... after a 10-minute conversation and some confusion about my serial number (theirs, not mine), now it expires May 4th.
I never received an e-mail nor a letter and if I had not called, my chance would have slipped away to purchase Applecare.

So be warned, reminders will not always come. Keep track of your purchase date so you will know when your warranty expires and when your chance to purchase Applecare goes away.
