Apple Care on refurb?

Long story short, I switched from an iPhone 5 to the Note 4 and have had some problems. The first phone had a bad camera, now this one isn't getting cellular data.
I might fight ATT to see if they will send me a refurbished iPhone instead of another Note 4. My question is would I be able to get Apple Care on it?

its my understanding that you can only get apple care if you buy it directly from Apple.

I do believe Squaretrade will work for you though.

It's not a refurb you're getting from AT&T from what I'm told my CS. It's a return. I was told certified like new is eligible for Apple Care.
