How long after getting an ipad 4 do I have to buy apple care? Thanks in advance.

Sometimes they will sell it over the phone.
Often they insist on inspection at an Apple store before the coverage goes into effect.

I didn't get anything like that. If they refused service to me, I'll show them the physical receipt they sent me. While you are correct about them wanting you to go to the store, they understand if you can't get to an Apple Store, especially if there's not one in your state.

Absolutely. I've added Apple care over the phone, one rep said no, while the next said no problem.

You can purchase an apple care plan up until the provided limited warranty expires, that's a year folks.

And yes,you can also purchase the above by merely calling the support line.

I stand corrected. When was the protection plan wiped out completely for the mentioned devices in the states, and substituted exclusively by ac+ ?

AC+ was changed when the 4S came out. I guess Apple realized they could charge for replacing a cracked screen instead of just swapping out one freebie.

I just got it on a mini by phone -- no problem.

This is usually the case. While I don't bother with AppleCare on my iDevices, I buy it for all my Apple computers. It's a very good way to insure you are covered in the event of a failure beyond the one year warranty.

AppleCare is a really great service when it comes time to use it. They run a very good operation.
