Is it worth it for me to try and buy a new screen from eBay and replace it myself? Are the panels legit and genuine?

I’m pretty sure that doing your own repairs voids any warranty you might have. Maybe that’s not an issue with you.

$169 seems very reasonable to me. Depends how long you plan to hang onto the device for. If you're planning to hang onto it for a bit then it might not be a bad idea to get the battery replaced too while they are opening it up. (depending how old it is)

Absolutely it's worth it.

You can't trust repair shops* to...
[1] replace the screen with a legitimate Apple part - many use off-brand screens that are lacking in quality and can cause issues.
[2] replace the waterproofing adhesive correctly, like Apple will. Many will let you know up front that a repair will remove waterproofing.

* or eBay shops. Many will claim the parts are legitimate. They are most likely not.

I wish the iPhone X screen and back replacements would go down now that the 11 is coming out

Well depends. If it’s 3years old i would look for a well reviewed seller of displays and do it by yourself. There are lemons out there with non working 3d touch, bad colors and less brightness. But also better ones...

I did it 2 times on a 6s and once on a 7 (non plus) for 25€ each. Sorry I can only recommend a german ebay seller.
