Research firm IDC today released results for global mobile phone sales for the second quarter of 2011, showing strong growth for Apple as it sits firmly in fourth place and closes quickly on LG in the race for third place among global phone vendors.
Apple maintained its number four position overall but closed the gap on Top 5 competitors thanks to another record unit shipment quarter. The company easily posted the highest growth rate of the worldwide leaders despite the fact that its flagship iPhone 4 is now more than a year old. The triple-digit shipment volume growth allowed Apple to more than double its share when compared to the same quarter last year. Apple's ability to bring its smartphone momentum to developing economies, where it's less successful, will help dictate the company's smartphone fortunes in future.
Apple's share of the global market grew to 5.6% after hitting the 5% milestone last quarter, and grew up over 140% year-over-year against the backdrop of a market that grew by only 11.3% overall.

IDC within the next few days should be breaking down the data to reveal results for smartphones specifically, and while Apple has been reported to have passed Nokia to become the world's largest smartphone vendor, some analysts have suggested that Samsung may have ridden Android's popularity to even stronger growth that may have allowed it to surpass Apple last quarter.

Why is the apple store down

I think Samsung may have ridden the "photocopy the Apple product look" to surpass Apple last quarter.

But it's fascinating that Apple in in 4th place with two of the three above them loosing altitude, while RIM is somewhere down in "other" and snagging power lines and tree limbs.

amazing how that's all mobile phones and apple only makes a smart phone.

most of those phone sare free or buy one get 1 free or buy one get a whole family of phones free.

Is it me... or a simple look at the numbers tells us, if Apple was predicted to surpass Nokia in smartphones as No 1, and they had a 142% growth... it is necessarily above samsung, who "just" had a 10% growth, I mean, Apple does nothing but smartphones (one smartphone), and samsung does a hell lot of basic phones... Apple saw its smartphone units increase by 142%... samsung, a 10% which includes basic and smartphones...

Event more important though, its revenue and profit market share... Apple might make more with one unit sold ($700 unsubsidized phone), than what others make with 10 ($50 basic phones)...

Same happens with above $1K PC's... market in which apple is leader, the fact that they can make the ranking by units as well having such a high price per unit is impressive...

I'm confused.

There are many manufacturers under the label of "other". 145 million units are under that label. Motorola comes to mind. Apple is far from second to last.

What's so special about being able to read?

You didn't really think there were only 6 companies in the world making phones, did you? The top company being named "Others"?

Are you really that dense? Context mean anything to the two of you? Do I really have to spell out:

What's so special about 2nd last on that list?

When a company is on the top 5 list, the company is special.

Android low-end phone maker. And that's putting it lightly.

What do you mean by that? Are you talking about the quality or just the price?
Have you actually used one?
I haven't, so all I can judge from is specs and reviews, and ZTE seem to be very low-price, yet fully capable smart phones and reviews are generally positive.

Because only Amazon can operate a store that's never close.

Apple is adding the news that they just bought Barnes and Nobel. :)

Nobel, right...

Numbers are likely to reflect global share, not restricted to smart phone sales. As shown in the article above Samsung had a growth in the region of 500% in the smart phone segment. But yes, Apple is #1 shipper for smartphones last quarter. Samsung is the fastest growing one though, and very close to beat Apple in the overall (smart phone) fight.

Just by looking at the numbers that is...

And yes, as noted sales figures doesnt necessarily say jack **** about profits. One has to remember that a high price - high premium strategy places a natural restriction of ones market share though. Not that i think Apple really minds. After all, if they can maintain dominance of the most profitable market segment, why should they waste time fighting for pennies with the rest?

Had no idea whatsoever that Nokia and Samsung are so far ahead of everyone else, would be interesting to see if Samsung can overtake Nokia. As for Apple, they'll no doubt overtake LG soon and perhaps catch up with Samsung and Nokia fairly soon. :)

The reason Nokia and Samsung is so far ahead is that they have products in all price segments. The only way Apple could catch up in the foreseeable future is if they also begin selling cheap, simple dumbphones. I don't think that's going to happen, Apple is already no. 1 in the smart phone segment and making a huge profit from it, that's what matters to Apple

Speaking of ZTE they apparently signed up for wp7 as well. And of course LTD hasn't used a ZTE device. He can tell from the lack of fruit that it sucks, duh.
