If I look up that game in the App Store then it has the "No Details Provided" message where the dev's contact details would usually appear. I wonder whether Apple's trying to force an update to force the dev to provide those details.

However, the fact that I need to wonder in the first place is a big part of the problem. Apple should just tell the developer what the issue is.

“Apple spokesperson told Game Developer that apps that have not been updated over the past three years and fail to meet a minimal download threshold—could possibly be removed from the App Store.

They also reiterated that applications deemed outdated or no longer functional, alongside those that don't follow current review guidelines, can also be pulled from the App Store.”

They are removing abandoned apps. Why is this a bad thing? I suspect it has something to do with having tens of thousands of broken or outdated apps in the App Store is costing Apple money.

I think it’s a good thing because when I’m looking for an app I don’t want the search results showing apps that haven’t been updated since iOS 9 😂

I think it's a bad thing because I can't download older "purchased" apps and games onto my older devices again, which are the only place they can even run because Apple breaks compatibility so frequently (which in itself isn't all bad, it keeps the systems from accumulating decades worth of cruft). There's no need to show 32bit apps to a user browsing on a modern iPad or iPhone, but it should still be possible to access them on compatible older devices.

If you go to an art showcase, and the museum has certain rules for certain areas about how art can be framed, complaining that the museum took your piece off the wall because you refused to follow those rules isn't being against creativity. I get what the developer is trying to say, but I also see it Apple's way. Also it could be worse. Apple gave the developer plenty of time to update. Some developers will pull games that you bought yourself for no reason other than they feel like it. I'm thinking of games like Mirror's Edge specifically.

I absolutely understand and can relate to this. In my early computing days, you purchased physical media that contained the software. Nowadays, we download the software from someone else’s server. It’s especially annoying when you can’t exactly save the file like you can on a desktop OS.

Unfortunately, it’s inevitable that when you have a server that’s holding over a million apps, some of them are going to be deleted. It could be the person that made the app doesn’t want it available anymore. A good example is Crossy Road. It could be that Apple has decided they no longer want to host it on their server. I’m not sure if there’s a fix to this. People often say they paid for an app, but that’s not exactly correct. Even when you purchased an app or program on physical media you were only purchasing the license to use the app.

If the app is feature-complete and bug-free then why should it be removed?
Are apps designed for iOS 10 bug free in iOS 18? I suspect there’s going to be some problems. I do understand your point, but Apple is looking at it in the sense that the app was abandoned by the developer. I absolutely love some nostalgic programs, but I don’t think Apple is going to keep these for a modern device.

If Apple chooses to remove an app then the developer should have the choice to sell it elsewhere (personally I think they should have this choice regardless).
I think the developer can just update the app? Also, the developer can sell it elsewhere. There’s the Google Play store. I don’t think Apple has any exclusive contract to tell the developer they can’t sell their app somewhere else.

Unless I’m misunderstanding, I don’t think Apple is deleting apps that are actively maintained by developer. If so, that’s stupid. I don’t see any reason why they should do that.

All the developer has to do is recompile and upload a new version if it’s still working.

It’s 5 mins of effort max

You must have missed several years of discussions and fighting about this very subject. The EU forced Apple to allow other app stores on its devices, everywhere else you can only install apps to iDevices from Apple's app store.

You don't even mention the visitor/consumer in your museum. Why should we always be screwed over? We pay for something and then have no control over how long we can use it. That's not right.

I watch the news about the EU. Every time I see news about it I think I’m so glad to live in the USA. 😂
