Apple has officially discontinued the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, removing them from its product lineup following the announcement of the iPhone 16e.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus were introduced in September 2022 as the standard models in Apple's annual smartphone refresh, positioned below the higher-end Pro models. At the time of their discontinuation, the iPhone 14 was priced at $599, while the iPhone 14 Plus was available for $699, marking a reduction from their original launch prices of $799 and $899, respectively.

The standard iPhone 14 retained a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, while the iPhone 14 Plus introduced a 6.7-inch variant—the first time Apple offered a large-screen option on a non-Pro model. Unlike previous years, there was no iPhone 14 mini, as Apple opted to replace the compact 5.4-inch model with the larger Plus variant.

Both devices were powered by the A15 Bionic chip, which had originally debuted in the iPhone 13, featuring a 5-core GPU for improved graphics performance. They also gained Crash Detection, which leveraged onboard sensors to detect severe car accidents and automatically contact emergency services if the user was unresponsive, and Emergency SOS via satellite, allowing users to communicate with emergency responders in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity.

The camera system was enhanced with the introduction of the Photonic Engine, a computational photography technology aimed at improving low-light performance across all cameras. Additionally, the front-facing TrueDepth camera received autofocus for the first time to improve sharpness in selfies and video calls.

It's worth noting Apple has never discontinued a mainline iPhone midway through the year before. With their removal from Apple's website, the company's non-Pro lineup now consists of only the iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, and iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.

In my opinion there are still too many iPhone models in the current product lineup. iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, and iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. I wish Apple would go back to keeping it simple. Same with the current iPad lineup.

I've lost track of all the iPads and what each represents for years...

Yeah just you could use $600 to buy a two camera average iPhone 14 few minutes ago, now they only offer you a SE one camera phone with the same price, well a better name may be.

I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed... tbh. Thanks to AI this phone will at least have a decent RAM, then also good enough CPU and supposedly battery life. But no Mag safe, like c'mon..

I think they started with the iPhone 14's chassis for the design of the 16e, since they share the exact same x/y/z dimensions.

Comparing the two is interesting to me, since the 16e replaces the 14 at the same price points.. Going from 14 to 16e you gain:
  • Action Button
  • Apple Intelligence
  • A18 (with more RAM)
  • 48MP main sensor with 2x crop
  • Better battery life (20 hours -> 26 hours)
  • USB-C
  • Smart HDR 5
  • Wind noise reduction and Audio Mix
A healthy suite of upgrades, right? But you lose:
  • Color options
  • MagSafe and Qi2 charging speeds (15W -> 7.5W)
  • Cinematic mode and Action mode camera settings
  • mmWave 5G
  • Ultra Wideband
  • 0.5x Ultra Wide camera
  • Focus Control in Portrait mode
A lot of tradeoffs there.

the 14 was always a black sheep. Barely better than the 13 to justify the price and released a year before the anticipated 15 which came with usb c and dynamic island.

Good comparison

If one doesn't care about AI (and thus RAM somewhat), and is indifferent on USB-C vs Lightning, it'd be hard to recommend a 16e over a 14 in a totally straightforward "clear win" sort of way

Probably to uniform to the EU/EEA offering, and to speed up the lightning replacement and the Apple Intelligence adoption.

I wonder if next September, when the iPhone 17 gets announced, they will revert back to a 3-year offering (15, 16, 17, and 17pro) or if they will discontinue also the 15

With lightning devices being phased out, was expecting it to happen by the time 17 series is released. Surprised to see the announcement today.

It should be like this

16e $599
16 (may have 16 plus too)
17
17air (replacing “Plus” series)
17 pro
17 pro max

17e with new cpu in spring 2026 and keep charging $599
