I looked at the Apple 27" screen before it went thunderbolt and it was £600. Expensive but maybe I'll get one at Christmas I thought. Now the displays are Thunderbolt they are £900 , which seems over the top. They are still 999usd in America which = £613 .

What is up with the uk price?

Err, the 27" ACD has never been £600 in the UK. It has always been £899. You may be confused with the earlier 24" model (looks identical bar size) that was £599.

In addition, the US price doesn't include local taxes, whilst the UK includes VAT and import duties. This reduces the price difference quite significantly.

Hmmm. I wonder if a 27" monitor is too ambitious for a holiday purchase in the US . It might require a very large suitcase ;)

It's not really £899 as 20% of it is VAT which brings down the cost to £749.

Yes still more expensive than the US price, but far closer.

In fact if you are student in the UK the HE price is only £746 inc vat which is £622 only a few quid more than the US price :)
