Apple Display Can No Longer Be Turned Off?

I've had a 23" Apple Cinema Display since June and ever since I've had it I was able to power it off by pressing the power button on it. Well it seems as of a couple weeks ago this no longer works, pressing the power button now simply causes the white LED to pulse once and then nothing happens. In Mac OS the "Are you sure you want to shutdown" dialog opens, on Windows nothing happens. There doesn't seem to be any obvious get back the old functionality which is rather irritating as I've had to physically unplug the monitor while away. Interestingly about two weeks ago the old functionality seemed to magically restore itself, however it only worked once then went back to not working. Last week I got a second 23" Apple display and it does the same thing. Why bother putting a power button on these if it does nothing?

Not sure why it would work then stop but make sure the correct option is checked: system preferences/displays/options - choose "turns the display on and off."
