Apple Displays: Calibration (Hardware or Software)

I'm going to be getting a 23" ACD I suspect.

Can you hardware calibrate them or software only?

I hear the newer versions are the ones that have remedied the pink cast. Is there a website to run a serial number through to see if I am getting newer stock? I thought I saw that posted once.
