Does software update check for all apps and programs or just Mac OS X software? Do I have to go to each program and ask it to check for new software? My MBP hasn't come up with any updates recently.

No. Software update will not do application updates, but there is a programme called AppFresh which does, you can find a link to it on the site in my signature.

Software Update does do application updates, but only for Apple software and pre-installed apps, like Mail, Address Book, iLife, iWork, etc. It does NOT update MS Office, Firefox, Adobe apps, etc, only Apple stuff.

True, I forgot it does iTunes etc, but most applications that are added later ie third party apps, do not update through the Software Update.

Thanks for the clarification.

So does Appfresh replace while it upgrades or does it give me copies of the program. Because it says its downloading the program not like overwriting or updating it.
