Apple has announced it will be donating undisclosed amounts to relief efforts in Asia following separate disasters, including multiple building fires in Hong Kong and a series of severe storms and flooding across Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka.

"Heartbroken by the devastating fire in Hong Kong," said Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a social media post last week. "Everyone affected is in our thoughts and we are thankful for the first responders. Apple is donating to relief efforts on the ground."

"Storms across Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka have devastated communities," said Cook, in another post today. "At Apple, we're thinking of everyone affected, and will be donating to relief and building efforts on the ground."

Apple has donated to the Red Cross for relief efforts in the past.

It was a horrible tragedy, too. There is talk of possibly 200 or more dead because the contractor was using a netting material for the building that was NOT fireproof.
The buildings are first surrounded by 3-4 foot wide scaffolds, then the nets outside that. If the scaffolds were not all bamboo, which can sort of easy to light up and provide long-lasting heat, the outskirts nets would never have chances to light up the actual bodies of the buildings.

There were a lot of things happened even since last year surrounding this re-modeling. :(

Yes, In Japan they use Aluminium Scaffolds, come to think of it only China, Vietnam and maybe Thailand if memory doesn't fail me, in most other asian countries that i have been Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea they also use metal scaffolds.

“Undisclosed amounts” tells me it’s a penny. And good for Tim because it was probably hard to get himself to stop pinching that penny

It is proven that bamboo is not easily light up by fire.
Chinese cuisine even have dishes that cooks the rice within the bamboo.
If the bamboo can be lit up, then the rice would simply be inedible.

I wonder why the donation amounts are "undisclosed"?
Because no matter how much Apple donates, people will complain that it's not enough. We've seen every time a story about Apple giving money for a cause appears on MR. "A $3T company donating a paltry few millions? Shame, shame."🙄 How ever much Apple donated, it's a lot more than 99.44% of the loud mouth complainers donated.

I appreciate your reply, but could probably do without the insinuations and denigration of others.

In fairness, your initial quotes around "undisclosed" did seem like that kind of insinuation, though I fully agree with your later sentiment.

The bamboo for rice cooking are fresh ones, also it needs to be filled up with water. The bamboo for the scaffolds are fully dried up ones, quite easy to light up and can burn for quite some time.

Mainland China released a law several years ago requiring all scaffolds of certain height be metal. Hong Kong, on the other hand, insists on bamboo scaffolds.

And it is even proven on site that the bamboo were not easily flammable and not the main culprit.
The nets on the other hand, were easily lit up AND drips to spread the fire.
