Apple dual link dvi adapter

Hi,
i am currently using the apple mini DP to dual link DVI adapter. Its connected to my 2013 iMac running 10.10.4 and its hooked up to an Acer 2560x1440 display.
recently i've noticed some random blackouts of the Acer display. I have seen many articles about the issues with the adapter....but more are some years old. i know i am running firmware version 1.03 for the adapter. which i believe is the most current.
would connecting the usb to a powered hub help?
