Apple DVD Player Issue

Is the Apple DVD Player capable of playing from an external DVD drive linked through Firewire (400)?

I have a new Pioneer 111D External drive, which does not appear to agree with Apple DVD Player. The error code of -70012 with "An initialization error has occurred" pops up when I try to play any DVD from the drive.
