Apple earphones are not working with macbook pro

I have a 13" early 2011 model of the macbook pro. This morning when I plugged in my apple earphones into the headphone jack, the sound was still coming out of the macbook pro speakers instead of the earphones. I tried another set of apple earphones and the same thing happened again. I have running snow leopard and just updated my computer yesterday. Both these earphones work fine with my ipad.
 
Is the optical audio triggered? Look inside the headphone jack, is there a red light? Sometimes headphones will trigger the optical audio and the little switch in there will get stuck. Usually just plugging the headphones in and pulling them out a few times will dislodge it. If not, you may have to take it to Apple.
