Another recent acquisition. I have tried this on two Macintosh SE computers and am not seeing any signs of life. I cannot insert a floppy either as it goes in only so far and then meets resistance. Anyone familiar with this sort of thing and what troubleshooting I can do on it to see whether it is indeed dead or just seized up? It looks clean inside from what I can see, no obvious signs of any component leakage or burn outs.

Sounds like the eject mechanism is seized. Either lubricant has hardened and/or the eject motor gearbox has a cog with broken teeth.

You MIGHT be able to use the manual eject to return it to an open position, but you really should disassemble it to have a look.

Be very careful when the drive is in this state - it's easy to damage the top head with a diskette since the head may not be in it's upper position.

And..... a final warning.... do not pull the top head upwards. You risk stretching the spring which is NOT replaceable, requiring a new head assembly and alignment.
