There's a greater chance of it being updated to play 8-track tapes

Well, thanks for your replies, folks. That kinda sucks. I don't see why not but I guess I'll be looking at the Samsung DVD/Blu Ray externals

If I can draw any conclusions from Apple's behaviour so far, I'd say they are about to steer away from disk-based media altogether.
I think the attitude hasn't changed since 2008:
Steve Jobs suggests Blu-ray isn't coming to Macs any time soon
PS To be honest, in my opinion BD will never take off so widely as DVD did, because "Streaming/downloading of HD killed the Blu Ray star".
