apple extreme and hdd question

I know.there.is a million and one threads on this subject and that's why i'm asking it here. Can't seem to get a straight answer. I decided to purchase a apple extreme. I currenly am running time machine on a hard drive connected to the back of my imac and a second hard drive for my media connected in the back also. I would like to share the media drive with my network but will this not back up on time machine if I did do that? And how is any of.this possible if I wanted to? I would like to connect my printer also to the airport extreme and is that possible with a 2.0 splitter? Thank for the help
