anyone notice one of the images in the patent has a strange unnamed icon that looks like the front of a car? turn-by-turn navigation app?

Funny

it is funny you said you use your nose because I always do that and people make fun of me. :(

This is one security feature i might actually use since touching a finger print reader to unlock is even easier than swipe to unlock.

You have to swipe your finger across a biometric fingerprint scanner.

I hope they don't build a sensor for the "Fart" developers to use as a biometric security app. :p

but, but, what if my finger falls off :p

LOL. But seriously, I am sure a code would be a backup like on laptops. I would welcome the feature as I am getting tired of typing my code in all the time. If I take it off I can't leave my phone around peoples' houses without someone playing games or reading my personal info without permission.

Plus..I love that if I loose it it will format itself when someone tries to use it. Then I just restore to me new phone :D

Dock connector? We saw this icon at the event on March 17th. Right below the D in SDK. However, the cord doesn't fit but it could just be a quick sketch.

I thought the dock connector icon shown there was just a symbol of new opportunity for 3rd party accessories. But, that is a good point that it does look a bit similar.

I didn't realize this. I'm surprised that wouldn't give a less detailed reading.

You've never seen one of these things, have you. My laptop happens to have one, so I've attached a pic for your benefit (poor image quality benefits of the iPhone camera). The thin metallic strip is the reader, so indeed the only way to actually scan your entire fingerprint is to swipe it.

Presumably they would really need to pair this with the smudge-free screen technologies that have been in the news recently, as you can probably lift a usable fingerprint off my iPhone's glass a good 50-70% of the time. ;)

That I have not seen. I was thinking there was some way of building this into a screen. But I guess that is way off.

Quite a few smartphones have or, have had, fingerprint scanners. They were also popular on some models of PDAs a few years back.

One even had the scanner double as a navigation pad.

One of Apple's "new" ideas is to have a hidden sensor etched into the screen, yes.

I'm more interested in the idea of using a front-facing camera (mentioned in the patent) to get retina and eye images for unlocking the phone. This could later apply to laptops and tablets Apple might produce... Pretty futuristic patent... me like!
