Apple today shared a new video that follows Grammy-nominated songwriter and music producer Oak Felder as he creates a new song. Felder makes use of multiple Apple products, including the 16-inch MacBook Pro and iMac.

A major update is coming and we’ve had 8 point updates since the last major revision—we are currently at 10.4.8.

Observation: I’m laughing at the reference to $2k studio fee per day when his house studio (acoustically treated), and his hardware for the entire set up (probably $150k+) is combined over $1-$2 million.

In relation to the cost of his iMac and MacBook Pro sure that cost is peanuts.

Note: that LA house is well past $10 million

Second note: As a vocalist all I can say is I don’t see any U87Ai or M149 by Neumann anywhere. You don’t scrimp on the mics—it’s what does 90%+ of the work for you combined with a professional level Audio Interface via Thunderbolt and all that hardware to free up the weakest link in the equation—the underpowered iMac and MacBook Pro. High quality reverbs add massive latency which is where hardware reverbs/compressors/EQs come in, full mic’d up drums (even the stripped down set shown) need a dozen plus XLR mic which means high end AI solutions like Apogee Ensemble/Symphony/Etc with 30 inputs to record—which is why he was renting a specific studio already staged to capture those raw drum sessions via the MacBook Pro before later remixing them in the home studio. Lots of interdependencies require a seasoned professional never mind an eighteen year old kid to see his dream come to life.

Regarding the drums most use prebuilt kits to get the song down and later bring in a session drummer/tour drummer to add original color to the tracks adding or replacing the earlier foundation of the drum tracks. Neil Peart‘s/Bonam/etc of the world come but once a lifetime, if ever. The ability to make your finished product with a modern DAW and all the third party kits does make it possible for the eighteen year old’s dream come true. Experience makes it possible to take it to another level all together and that’s where he gets paid the big bucks.

Sure, but the studio and mics etc are all paid for by the artist and/or record company right? So the 18 yr old kid who wants to be the producer that also gets hired for the job, only needs to provide his laptop and the software on it? The capabilities of that has come a long way in the last decades. I think that's the point isn't it? Or am I missing something?

Also, if you look at something like the context of a Justin Bieber who becomes famous after posting his songs on youtube, the 18yr old kids wanting to emulate that can do so with a very cheap set up. Sure, it's not professional grade sound for that cheap setup, but it's good enough to get you started and discovered on youtube if your songs are good enough.

These are all the things that have become more and more possible with not much more than a laptop as technology has advanced. You don't even need a $3k 16" MBP though. And even Beats headphones will do the job :D

PS - Not trying to put you down at all, I absolutely loved your comment, and the insight you've provided of the gear that's required these days for a professional set up. Just saying that it seems like more and more is possible on a cheaper budget these days, just to get a foot in the door.

I’m curious where you first discovered your vocal talents? What of vocalists that made a great career starting with garbage microphones or sung in churches, halls, homes etc without high end microphones:

Aretha Franklin,
Gladys Knight
Whitney Houston,
Marvin Gaye,
James Brown,
Smokey Robinson,
Robyn,
UB40’s lead singer.

many of these incredible artists began their careers in singing without high end microphones, many began touring without high end microphones.

I’m sure you have great vocals yet I think you’re missing the point this producer is trying to make. Never should an artist value their worth based on the equipment at their disposal. Not ever. Gads I feel like Tony Stark lecturing Spideman about the new suit he gave and took away from him. Lmao yeah I’m no tony stark, but I know of great vocalists that are struggling to get their big break and in any room and with anyone’s preference for other genres would appreciate their beautiful singing voices. Let’s start by appreciating Apple is at least taking music seriously in any little degree again.

I do believe that Björk was quite partial to singing into a beta 58 and these takes were often used in the final recordings. That's a $150 mic for those that might not be familiar.
 
This video really made me give up my dreams to produce music, what an absolute amazing producer and so much skill combined. Before I always thought it was doable. But seeing this talented producer wow, this is like another level you rarely seen, it just floated on and he knew exactly what he was after. Impressive ! But killed my dream completely :)

I've got a 80 Channel 9K SSL dongle hanging off my MBP too.
still need mics and pre-amps...
