Apple has recruited a former Facebook employee who went on to become one of the social network's most ardent critics, reports The Financial Times (paywall). Sandy Parakilas monitored the privacy and policy compliance of Facebook developers for 18 months before leaving the social network in 2012.

Sandy Parakilas talking to Bloomberg

During his time at the company, Parakilas felt his concerns about its data-sharing policies were downplayed, according to FT.

Last year, following the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Parakilas also gave evidence to the British parliament's digital, culture, media, and sport committee, and told MPs that Facebook's data protection practices were "far outside the bounds of what should have been allowed" between 2010 and 2014.
Mr Parakilas has urged the tech industry to improve its data protection practices, increase the use of encrypted messaging and "verify the truth of statements that can be viewed by millions of people".

"We now live in a world where racist demagogues and their dictator buddies can cynically exploit our tools to seize power," he wrote in a blog post in late 2016. "There is no such thing as a 'neutral platform'. Facebook, Twitter and Google all profited from this perversion of democracy."
According to FT's sources, Parakilas will work in Apple's privacy team as a product manager, an internal-facing role designed to ensure that new products in development protect users' privacy and minimize data collection.

Apple has made much of its privacy focus in recent years. In 2018, CEO Tim Cook singled out user privacy a "core value" of Apple's that reaches way back to before smartphones had become a feature of people's daily lives.

Recently, in the heart of Las Vegas where the Consumer Electronics Show is currently underway, Apple put up a giant sign touting the security of its devices to remind the tech industry of its heavy emphasis on privacy.

Apple does not have a presence at the show, but CES attendees will be seeing products from companies with less of a privacy focus like Google and Amazon.

Congratulations to him, I hope he is successful in his new role. No doubt his past experience will be of great value.

Not wanting to invite problems, but might I humbly suggest this story/comments thread be placed in the PRSI section, given it directly addresses political and social views and issues, unlike many other articles that still find themselves there for merely tip-toeing around them...?

“Racist demagogues and their dictator buddies?”

Please. Another leftwing loon screaming about the end of the world because they lost a single election, all the while advocating Soviet-style information control so they can make sure the public only hears “The Truth”.

Preening idiots like Parakilas and massive companies like Facebook and Google, increasingly willing to police expression and suppress the wrong ideas, are the real threat to freedom...

Turned complaining about Facebook into a job. You really can monetize anything in this new economy.

Odd job indeed. If the previous internal HR role for employee equality is anything to go by this guy maybe out of a job in 6mths.

One of the things I still like about Apple is their stance on privacy.

Probably the best thing going for Apple right now that is barely debated about.

Let’s see what this guy can do.

I'm sure the hire had nothing to do with his inside knowledge of Facebook's practices:

Sandy Parakilas: You see Mr Cook here's where Facebook got caught out
Tim Cook: Hmmm interesting, we'd better avoid that one.....

/s

He left FB in 2012. We’re in 2019. I am pretty sure most of his knowledge of what happened back then at FB is either public domain or somewhat useless.

Facebook's role in the Myanmar genocide is well documented. As well as the huge mess that is Brexit. Far right fascist movements in Hungary, France, Italy, Ukraine, Brazil have all benefited from social media.

remember when "Fake News" really meant fake stories coming out of a small country in the balkans?

I don't use the Facebook but even I know that Facebook has passed its peak and is on a downward trend. Instagram is the hot new thing for various demographics because it offers a much more isolated experience which is what younger people enjoy. And I suspect their change to their media feedback scroll thingamajig that people whine about incessantly uses some kind of AI algorithm to bring up prettier things rather than ugly things. In other words, the more visual candy there is in terms of photo quality and subject or subject matter, the higher it is at the top of that scroll thingamajig.

The reality is no one wants to see their parents or extended family on a social media network. Having a web of friends and associates where someone can escape for 10-15 minutes a day and catch up visually is more attractive to younger people.

I suspect this is why SnapChat is also popular with younger people than old people, despite the company facing issue after issue (if you keep up with their rolling stock price and why it's happening). Though I've also read reports of youth abandoning SnapChat because of the apps problems and because Instagram can rapidly implement the same product features quickly and more easily compared to SnapChat.

What a bunch of crap. The entire article is virtual signaling, talking about discovering "the truth", and "core values" then he literally goes right off the edge and acts the exact same way, on the other side of the spectrum. Blatant hypocrites are my least favorite types.

I appreciate Apple for their privacy stance, but they have the same left wing agenda that many other tech companies in CA do. It's not even so much their agenda pushing that I dislike, because of course everyone will do so; it's moreso that they assume what is best for others. The power is not so much in the individual people, but the collective. I find that dangerous, as well all know (as is evident in police state China), that a collective is easily corrupted. When you keep power at the individual level, things are more spread out; more easily sustainable

One thing I do look forward to in terms of "curation" is getting some Russian bot accounts out of the equation. Reddit is filled with them.
