Apple CEO Tim Cook also tweeted out support for military veterans this morning, including those working within Apple. There's a new "Saluting Our Veterans" section on Apple Music today as well, featuring playlists filled with music handpicked by "a diverse group of former service members."

Veterans Day is held annually in the United States on November 11, as a way to celebrate and remember individuals who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

I too salute the veterans. However, why is it that Memorial Day and Veterans Day feel like the same celebration?

Quick history lesson:

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, honors the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. That's why it's always 11/11 (but usually honored on the nearest business day). Memorial Day honor those who passed away in the service. Armed Forces Day is for those who serve.

I've had a number of family members serve and I'm glad to see Apple setting up a special section for a group that I think deserves having some special attention.

Memorial Day is for those who have died while serving in the military
Veterans Day is for those who have served in the military
Armed Forces Day is for those serving in the military

maybe I didn't get your ask correct though
I get that. My question is why is it essentially celebrated the same way. I see little difference other than the laying of the wreath by the president, they seem to be celebrated much the same way. However, @nwcs has a nice history lesson for all of us.

Did a little more looking:

Veteran's Day (nee Armistice Day) was originally intended to honor the end of WWI
Memorial Day (nee Decoration Day) was originally intended to honor the end of the US Civil War
Armed Force's Day originated after WWII to consolidate separate days in the US honoring the different branches of the military

Three different origins for three different conflicts but repurposed over time. I can see why it would look similar to modern people such as ourselves. Especially as, in the US, Memorial Day has taken on the double-meaning of unofficial start of summer and the only one generally observed as a holiday by most US companies.

"Honouring" by promoting a store selection? Somehow that doesn't seem right for this occasion. I guess it's no different than any other "holiday" and drawing attention to apps that are specific to them.
