I just purchased an iPhone XS today and have (attempted to) restore from my old iPhone 6S.

I keep getting prompted to "Enter the password for your Apple ID: "XXXXX@gmail.com"

I cannot recall the password for this account.

When I tried to reset the password, I get the message: "XXXXX@gmail.com is not an Apple ID"

This is very confusing.

I know I used that gmail address a long time ago to purchase music on iTunes, but it doesn't appear to be associated with a typical XXXX@icloud.com or XXXXX@me.com Apple ID. Perhaps this was before icloud.com existed?

Anyway, how can I fix this issue when I am not even able to reset the password on the account???

My new iPhone is unusable right now because I cannot get the error/prompt to keep coming up every 0.5 seconds.

Arghhhh!

Any advice would be appreciated....

Your best bet is to contact Apple Customer Support and have them resolve it for you. I had a situation some time ago where I had forgotten my answers to the 3 questions associated with my Apple ID. Apple Customer Support reset them for me.
