Tried connecting an ethernet cable to my iMac and I should have got the green light in the network preferences panel but do not. After trying all the obvious things, checking the cable, zapping the pRam re booting in safe mode none of these corrected the issue. My airport connects fine wirelessly but I also see that my firewire in the network prefs also remains red when I connect an external firewire drive but yet I see the drive on my desktop and can access and move files with no problem. Anyone else know anything else I have not tried?

Your ethernet port may have died. It happens.

Open Network Utility and check out the interface information panel for ethernet. Is anything shown in there when the cable is connected?

Also, as an FYI - the firewire interface in the Network Pref Panel is for when you're using a firewire cable to connect to another computer, not an external drive.
