Apple has picked up "Acapulco," an upcoming Apple TV+ Spanish and English-language comedy that is based on the 2017 movie "How to Be a Latin Lover." The TV series will star Eugenio Derbez, who was also in the movie.

"Acapulco" will feature half-hour episodes focusing on the story of a young Mexican man who gets his dream job at the hottest resort in the city. He soon realizes the job is more complicated than he imagined, and his beliefs and morals start to be questioned.

The show takes place in 1984 with Derbez narrating and playing the present day version of the character.

The series was created by Austin Winsberg (known for "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist"), Eduardo Cisneros (known for "Half Brothers" and "Instructions Not Included"), and Jason Shuman (known for "Role Models").

"Acapulco" is one of several international Apple Original TV shows, joining action-thriller "Echo 3" set in South America, "Pachinko" based on the novel by Min Jin Lee, and espionage thriller "Slow Horses."

Apple slowly churning out more generic TV.

To what end?

To sell £5 a month subscriptions?

Would love if they had the same approach to gaming - ya know actual software. Imagine what they could archive with million dollar budgets and the power of their hardware.

I despise most of the lame Mexican/Mexican-American, "latino oriented" uninspired crap you get from US-based productions... Univision, Telemundo, et. al, going for the lowest common denominator of cheesy humor and tired stereotypes.

Derbez made a few decently funny shows back in the day in Mexico but has now been swallowed whole by Hollywood and the small establishment of old farts in charge of financing these rinse and repeat soap opera style productions...

I like to see my Mexican people get a change to show their talents, not a fan of Derbez old stuff, I actually only really got into him with his “no se aceptan devoluciones” film! But I am glad to see more variety of cultures in Apple TV +!

As a Mexican agree with this. Disappointed to see this kind of content in both Apple TV+ and Disney +, who also announced similar shows.

This looks great! More international stuff please! If this is anything like Tehran in terms of quality, it's another solid addition.

Service barely offers anything currently [with a recent long gap in new releases] and is already diving into the niches. Interesting.
Barely anything? I'm not even going to bother listing the around 15 stellar shows. HBO quality. With second seasons on the way next month. It's clear you haven't watched anything on ATV+ and are pre-judging the shows.

Big filming delays because of Covid. Second seasons were supposed to come out in November.

It will be nothing like Tehran.
Eugenio Derbez is the worst comedy actor I have ever seen. When in SA I saw constant trailers for the film No Se and it looked appalling.
This will be low brow slap stick rubbish.
Hey. I'm old enough to remember when people saw the announcements of, count 'em:

The Morning Show
Dickinson
Servant
Mythic Quest
Central Park
Ted Lasso
Tehran

and many other bona fide successes for Apple.

And people on this forum had the same snap negative first impressions then as they do now. And they were wrong then. Let's see how this looks when it's finally released.

Agreed.

however the original latin lover movie that was hilarious from a kids perspective and a comedy based on that ... I'm not so sure would work.

We'll see what comes of this.

Apple is spending exactly as much on gaming as they want. They have plenty of money; spending on gaming doesn’t suffer at the hands of Apple TV+.

In the near future, I think they’ll be investing even more on gaming, but that’s completely decoupled from Apple TV+.

oh no.

i'm sure they can polish it some, but why not start out with better material. Prime has failed with their latin shows including one starring derbez called LOL. it is gut wrenching cringe and i couldn't finish it.

I'm hope it turns out well, but i really have low expectations.

I both agree and disagree. I've seen 3 of the 7 in your list (The Morning Show, Dickinson, and Ted Lasso).

Ted Lasso was absolutely brilliant, best series I've ever seen. Great characters, dialog, and plot, and a beautiful, powerful, underlying message.

But Dickinson was so unwatchable I only got through the first episode, as it was mostly a lecture about how women are so cool and awesome and how men are horrible (disappointing considering how fascinating the Emily Dickinson story is); and The Morning Show was mostly ok until the last episode, which again was a lecture about how women are awesome and men suck. I presume misandrists would find them both fun, but I can't understand how a normal person could possibly enjoy them.

I also watched See, and For All Mankind. See was ok. For All Mankind was ok at first, but failed to maintain much scientifically interesting, whilst slowly and surely degenerated into more typical Apple TV+ misandry.

Not familiar with any of the people involved in this specific show, but I love the idea of more spanish/english shows. Los Espookys on HBO is excellent.
