According to Apple, roughly 600,000 were pre-ordered. They've been making at least 2 million a month of these since around April. I think your pre-order is safe.

if they had 4 million in stock why would they have delayed shipping after 600,000? I don't think they have been mass producing them since April. At least not a 2 Million / month.

That doesn't make sense...Did you just decide to make up that 2Mil/month number?

They have to have stock in the stores that aren't for pre-orders.

Even if they've only made a million of the phones, 400,000 will be sent out world wide for in-store purchases.

And the fact that they're taking pre-orders means that, in fact, they have at LEAST 600,000 made. They wouldn't be delivering them next week if they haven't made them yet.

That's only preorders. There are also reservations and over the counter sales in stores. There are many, many stores in the five countries where Apple is selling the iPhone.

Furthermore, last year Apple only sold 1 million during the first weekend.

According to the same anaylyst (Ashok Kumar):

The iPad “is clearly not a game-changer, the iPhone… The killer application is missing.” - http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/a06ed01a-0b6a-11df-8232-00144feabdc0.html

He claimed that Apple had said told its manufacturers it wanted 1 million iPads per month – and he commented: “that’s clearly in excess of demand . . . Eventually it will find a niche and a success, but it’s not going to be of the scale and scope of the iPhone.” -http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/700661f4-3f40-11df-aae3-00144feabdc0.html

Then he thought it would do very well - http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-20006281-64.html

Mr Kumar has also said on a number of occasions that Verizon were about to offer the iPhone.

He has got some things right, but I would take a pinch of salt about this latest claim.

If you actually botherd to read the OP link instead of skimming posts then.. yes it does make sense.

I did read it and it says nothing about 2 million/ month since April. It says the PLANNED monthly production has been cut in half to 2 Mil.

It doesn't really matter. I am just saying I do not think Apple has 4 Million iPhones sitting in a warehouse right now.

and I'm just supposed to trust what Scott Moritz says? I don't know who he is and I don't know what kind of bias he has. Plenty of "writers" and "analyst" say a lot of stuff...but it's all just theories and pieced together information...

They are saying demand is 10 times greater than last year.
