Carrier Apple iPhone Payments

If I'm doing monthly payments on an iPhone through Apple/Citizens One. Is the phone locked to the carrier (ATT) that I chose at time of purchase? Or am I free to switch at any time since I'm financing through Apple and not ATT.

If you bought it from Apple it's unlocked. It from ATT then it's locked.

Thanks, that's the answer I was looking for. Wouldn't make sense to be tied to the carrier when they're not a part of the financing whatsoever.
