Apple plans to produce roughly 220 million iPhone units in 2022, a production target that is mostly unchanged from the previous year despite supply chain constraints and expected high demand for new iPhones this fall, Bloomberg reports.

Apple has reportedly told its suppliers that it still wants to make up to 220 million iPhone units this year, a target that is less than what market experts were expecting. Driven largely by the new iPhone 14 models expected in the fall, analysts were expecting a production target closer to 240 million units, according to the report.
The company is asking suppliers to assemble roughly 220 million iPhones, about the same as last year, according to people familiar with its projections, who asked not to be named as they’re not public. Market forecasts have hovered closer to 240 million units, driven by an expected major update to the iPhone in the fall. But the mobile industry has gotten off to a difficult start to the year and production estimates are down across the board.
The unchanged target from 2021 comes despite Apple's struggles with meeting the demand for existing products. Multiple products, including the company's latest Macs, remain back-ordered for several weeks if not months due to supply chain woes fueled by COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions.

This fall, Apple is planning to unveil the iPhone 14 lineup with an updated design, better cameras, performance, and more. The 2022 iPhones are expected to be a larger update than the iPhone 13 series this past fall, which brought minor updates to the cameras, improved display technology, and a new chip. It’s not just the ‘mobile’ industry, it’s the entire tech industry that is struggling with production and manufacturing. This is the new ‘norm’ for the foreseeable future. Walk into any electronic store, and you’ll likely see signs on almost every major supplier stating ‘back-ordered’ or ‘waiting list’, as this is just how it is right now until economically until we see an up-shift in consistent employee retention, which will also translate into a higher production numbers for a more regulated manufacturing process.

By the time iPhone 14 is readily available, the iPhone 15 is imminent.

WOW! So technically there are 326.7 million people currently in The Whole USA.

And Apple wants to sell 220 Million iPhone 14's .

That just blows my mind.

2/3 of the USA are all buying a new iPhone 14?

What will be production of the iPhone 15? Whats left over? 106 107 Million?

Analysts were expecting MORE than last year, are they joking? Inflation across the world is SOARING and is going to get worse by September. Apple are being cautious and rightly so - they are going to struggle this cycle, less so than rivals but struggle nevertheless.

Now more than ever people will be holding on to their devices longer and prioritising their shrinking disposable income.

Just spitballing, but it may be that Apple plans to make iPhone sales outside of the USA.

Apple will likely introduce a hardware subscription plan that will substantially reduce the monthly cost to “use” a new phone. A subscription will be quite different from the Apple plans that allow one to basically pay off a phone over two years or trade it in and extend the contract. This will result in a huge boost in US sales.

Tell me one thing this guy has said that played out. I've been reading some of his articles since the PC Magazine days in the 90's. I don't even know how he still has a career.
He's actually a pretty talented troll:

Gonna be hard to sell that many in the US. What they should do, and I’m no business expert, is try to sell them to the rest of the world, too.

He’s one of those folks that figured out a long time ago that you can make a career out of nonsense. There have been quite a sizable number of folks that have realized the same since then. :D

Every year iPhone sells well. This year the non Pro 6.7” model should be doing very well. A large screen without the ‘Pro’ price will be very welcome.
