Apple launched almost 30 new hardware products in 2024. Here's a look back at exactly what we got this year.

With the exception of Vision Pro, Apple's 2024 hardware releases largely marked a year of steady refinement. It wasn't a year of massive overhauls across the board, but it did feature some key themes.

The Vision Pro, released in February, stands out as Apple's biggest product launch. While its $3,499 price tag keeps it squarely in early-adopter territory, Apple's first spatial computing device provides a hint at where the company expects technology to move over the coming years. Despite both excitement and criticism surrounding its capabilities, it's clear that 2024 was about laying the foundation, with its true impact likely to unfold in the years to come.

With minor refreshes to the MacBook Air and iPad Air, and no new hardware releases at WWDC, the star of the first half of the year was undoubtedly the iPad Pro, which gained OLED displays, a thinner design, the M4 chip, an all-new Magic Keyboard, a landscape front-facing camera, and more.

In the second half of the year, Apple virtually completed its transition to USB-C with the long-awaited refresh of the AirPods, AirPods Max, Magic Keyboard, Magic Trackpad, and Magic Mouse. All that's left is the iPhone SE, which is now expected around March 2025.

The company also released new iPhone and Apple Watch models as usual in the fall, followed by a minor iPad mini refresh that added the A17 Pro chip and more memory for Apple Intelligence support. The iPhone 16 lineup focused on Apple Intelligence and the Camera Control, while the Apple Watch Series 10 saw the introduction of a more refined design and sleep apnea detection.

Closing out the year, Apple turned its attention to its Mac lineup. The M4 family of chips made its way to the iMac, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini, with the latter receiving a complete redesign for the first time in well over a decade. Next up to gain M4 chips are the MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro in 2025.

I'm still (pleasantly) surprised that Apple released a new iMac just a year after the 2023 model. I've gotten so used to waiting a long time for iMac updates. And for this to come with 16 GB of RAM standard... what a glorious year.

Definitely enjoying my Vision Pro, but only for videos. The technology behind Vision Pro is revolutionary, including much of the OS. The real issue is the product, which is too expensive for most people, and is also too heavy for the productivity piece. For videos I often am either lying down or in a chair which has head support. The first night trying it on felt to me like the first time using the original iPhone as far as the tech is concerned. Sadly the product itself is not there yet.

The iPad Pro is an awesome upgrade, but of course still held back by the OS. The new keyboard case is better in all aspects except it is now a little back heavy. The new pencil is better in every way. The OLED screen is incredible. Battery life has been sub par however.

I bought a M4 Mac mini but I couldn’t justify keeping it. I have an M1 Max MacBook Pro that I bring back and forth to work (and plug into LG 5k/4k monitors at work) and while the Mac mini was powerful enough to keep there, it seemed a little redundant. Good to know though the base level chip (with added RAM) is enough to keep up with my workload now.

Those are my top three. AirPods 4 are a win.

Biggest letdowns The USB-C peripherals which had no changes, and the pathetic update to the AirPods Max. I can see Apple not wanting to redesign them but to not add the new chip for Adaptive Audio and all the other AirPod Pro enhancements is just sad.

New iPhones are solid devices if you haven’t upgraded in a few years, but this was the first year since the original iPhone I returned and didn’t upgrade my iPhone. The 15 Pro Max is just too similar in terms of performance and cameras (two of which are identical), and the weight/size is just better to me as a usually prefer the standard phone. I actually tried going back to the regular sized pro this year but I found the 15 Pro Max still the right balance. The camera control was regressive to me in almost every way from just using the touch screen and other ways to access the camera.

Apple Vision Pro - this is the third time in my life. I've been an early adopter with Apple. The first was my Apple power book 145. That was the first truly standalone portable computer from Apple. That product line is still growing strong decades later. The second was my apple Newton 2100. I love that device and was brokenhearted when they killed it off. It was way ahead of its time and Apple was hemorrhaging money at the time. However, it's legacy in the myriad of smart phones. Certainly lives on

I'm optimistic that the Apple Vision Pro is going to thrive.
It's a cutting edge device and Apple is flush with money and has the ability to really turn this into an incredible new product line.
Otherwise all we're going to see is get another phone get another iPad get another laptop, etc. Apple really needs a new product space and AVP will definitely that.

AVP is indispensable for me because I travel a lot on airplanes and watching films with that is astonishing.

I do use it with my MacBook Pro for the incredible monitors and extra screens that provides.

However, I really wish Apple would design a new magic keyboard, which is small compact and has a trackpad instead of a mouse. I would love to travel with my Vision Pro and an appropriate magic keyboard that does not require a mouse.

I can’t believe Apple has not made this already. It is an obviously need and accessory that you realize would be great to have (something the size of the keyboard on the 11” iPad Pro, but just the bottom of course).

Also, while not a gamer, I still can’t believe Apple is so obvious to gaming on their devices, especially an AR/VR one. That should have been a major focus, just like Workouts are with Apple Watch.

Not sure I’d call products whose only change was a new color or a switch to USB-C a “launch.” Heck, I buy a new iPhone Pro every year and the yearly differences are negligible, but at least they have new names and buttons

Yes. Gaming is an incredible missed opportunity. Ive heard rumors of 3rd party controllers maybe coming to make for a more oculus-like experience possible.

#1 Hopefully the iPhone Air will be made in 2026, just in time for my upgrade. I'd love a thinner/lighter phone.

#2 Also, Vision SE and/or the existing Vision with full integration with MacOS for virtual computing on multiple systems simultaneously. I was a little let down by the massive lack of integration between Vision Pro and Mac... a big reason I returned mine after 13 days.

#3 It would also be nice to see some sort of system service that allows you to group your connected Macs into one logical processor or logical system. Those of us that can't afford a Mac Pro or even a studio can use their MacBooks/Minis with ARM processors to crunch away at big problems. I created a beowulf cluster using Linux in 2000, so it's not terribly difficult. I'm a little surprised Apple hasn't done this already tbh.

The proposed plans to be implemented on or after 20 January 2025 accelerated our Apple products upgrade schedule before price increases or lack of availability.

As a family unit, we acquired two iPhone 16 Pro Max 1TB, two iPad v7 mini 512GB, four BTO (build to order) 14" MacBook Pro Pro with nano screens, 48GB memory and 4TB SSDs, one BTO 14" MacBook Pro M4 Max with nano screen, 64GB memory and 4TB SSD, one BTO 16" MacBook Pro M4 Max with nano screen, 128GB memory and 8TB SSD and one BTO Mac mini Pro with 64GB Ram, 8TB SSD and 10Gb ethernet.

All items are in hand plus all needed accessories. Lead times were very short and much earlier than projected date at order time. Older Apple items were dispersed to the grandkids.

My M1 Ultra Mac Studio 128GB memory and 8TB SSD works just fine and the M2 Mini Pro 32GB Ram,2TB SSD and 10Gb ethernet is more than adequate as a file server with attached RAID device.
Will acquire another printer for summer place in January.

Happy New Year Ya'all

I think it's been a great year, honestly. Not only did we get the so much anticipated Mac mini redesign (after 14 years of the same design), making it much smaller, compact and half the weight, but also the chip that's powering that and all the new Macs, the M4, is also a great step forward. With 16GB of base RAM now, this has been a great year for the Mac, and -oh man, I'm starting to sound like Tim Cook- all the renewed devices that now include Ray Tracing support, and a CPU with much improved single core performance. This has been the year I've jumped from my 2014 Mac mini and a 1080p display, to a 2024 M4 Pro Mac mini and a gorgeous 4K @144Hz display.

But it has also been a great year for the iPad Pro. The new iPad Pro shipped with the aforementioned M4 chip (and I'm still wondering if those chips aren't packing actually 16GB of RAM like the Mac ones), and got an OLED display. It also got much thinner and lighter... But I got a bigger storage M2 iPad Pro to replace my 128GB M2 iPad Pro, because I just love this model and my eyes aren't comfortable with OLED Screens.

Finally, all the new iPhone models got 8GB of RAM as base memory, and if I didn't have a preference for smaller, more compact smartphones like my great SE3, I would have bought an iPhone 16 in teal, not only because it is gorgeous, but also because, just like MKBHD said, this year, the base model is the most Pro iPhone we've seen on that range of prices, because of the RAM, the SoC, and the cameras, which elevate it almost to the iPhone Pro range. So, yes, I think this is a great year to jump to new devices across all the Apple ecosystem.

We'll probably see another great Apple year in 2026, when all devices start mounting the first 2nm chips, with the A20 and the M6 generation, with much more efficient (one can dream) and powerful iDevices, and the Pro, Max and Ultra variants of the M6 having a much more "dedicated", or separated GPU on the chip, whatever this rumor means. The year we'll probably start seeing the first OLED MacBook Pros that all the people not sensitive to PWM will greatly enjoy.

But until 2026, yeah, this will be remembered as one of the greatest years in Apple Products history. At least by me.

Picked up two of the 2024 items: the iPad Mini and the 25w MagSafe Charger (two of those). Happy with both. Glad that the MagSafe Charger is now woven. Everything should be woven.

Oh, and the Beats Pill is new this year as well. Picked up that on sale. It’s quite nice. So nice that I might pickup a second Beats Pill. Too bad the included USB-C cable isn’t woven. Everything should be woven! lol

A lot of products were released this year. The new Mac mini is a wonderful computer. Very happy with my recent Series 10 purchase. Wonder whether there will be an iPad Pro refresh in 2025.
