I've owned both the Midnight Blue Case and the Red Leather Case. I can't be sure, but I am almost certain that the Red Leather case has been treated with a protectant while the blue one was untreated.

After about a week with the blue, I noticed that typical leather wear you see on apple leather cases, where some of it turns dark. On the red case, after the same amount of time, I've noticed none of that. I also feel like the two finishes feel different, like the red leather feels a little more synthetic than the blue.

Is it possible Apple treated the lighter colors more prone to wear so that they wouldn't have to deal with as many complaints of wear?

Definitely possible, since this was a big problem with the previous leather cases - they probably didn't see the wear happening on the midnight blue leather case as darker colours usually show less wear.
