Apple Logo/Icon has disappeared!

Today I noticed that the Apple logo/icon on the upper left corner of my iMac desktop screen has disappeared. I haven't installed anything new, including the OS, the computer is unchanged for quite awhile. Also, the strange thing is that if I dbl click on the space where the icon was, it still brings up the drop-down menu that normally shows after clicking on the apple logo. Any idea how I can restore the Apple logo/icon?

Have you shut down and restarted to see if it returns? Is the white menu bar still at the top of the screen along with other menu items, like File, Edit, View, etc.?
