Apple mail and Gmail imap issues

I am really sorry if this is a repeat question, but I just can't find a solution to this anywhere. Plenty of threads in various places, but no answers.

I have Apple mail set up with my Gmail account using IMAP. If I send a message though, I end up getting a copy of my sent message back (in the Gmail account folder). So I end up with sent messages in both my Mail sent messages folder, and in the Gmail folder.

Is there any way to stop getting these sent messages coming back to my Gmail account in Mail?

Thanks for any help, I am at my wits end.
