Apple Mail and zoom

Why is the only way to zoom the mail application to use the control key? And it isn't as smooth as pages or safari. With pages and safari, I pinch out and everything zooms out as I'd expect in order to make the text larger. With Mail, the control + swipe turns into some bastardized maneuver.
Thoughts?
