Apple Mail broken

As of yesterday both my wife's and my Apple Mail are broken (on separate machines). We both downloaded updates from Apple around the same time. The symptoms are that it loads extremely slowly, first opens up with the newest message being one from several weeks back, than after 10 or so minutes finally loads the recent messages. The app is also extremely slow, almost unresponsive. Hers is a 17" MBP and mine a 15.4" RMBP. Anybody else experienced similar issues?
