I have a friend using Apple Mail and iOS Mail. She only has two devices on her network, her MacBook Air and her iPhone, and her internet is through Verizon.

We use the same webhost / mailhost for email, etc. For me, everything works fine and they're a responsive company.

Yet her dynamic IP (from Verizon) gets repeatedly blocked because of too many failed login attempts. Example (lightly redacted)...

Jan 10 02:15:54 [mail server name]: imap-login: Disconnected: Aborted login by logging out (auth failed, 2 attempts in 4 secs): user=<hername@emaildomain.com>, method=PLAIN, rip=[##].132.20.51, lip=[##].31.99.15, TLS, session=<5nLho6ENff5hhBQz>”

After AGAIN confirming the correct password via logging into the webmail portal they provide, we’ve updated the password in her Mail apps for IMAP and SMTP settings. We’ve done this on both devices for GET and SEND mail settings.

She still gets blocked by the host for too many failed attempts. It’s as if there’’s another device on her network that’s trying to login but there isn’t one.

How best can we resolve this issue (short of trying a different host or relying on browser login)?

Is there some way to monitor login attempts over her network to the mailhost?
(BTW, the webhost doesn't have any more detailed logs than the sample entry posted above.)

Thank you!

My elderly uncle had a similar situation occur. Turned out he had his email account set up twice in Apple Mail. How he did this, I'm not quite sure, but one setup was using an old password and the other setup the valid password. Eventually, his IP was blocked as well for too many failed login attempts. This went on for several weeks until I had an opportunity to visit him and troubleshoot.
