Apple Mail no connection

When I try to set gmail it shows:

The Google IMAP server “imap.gmail.com” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.

For hotmail

The Hotmail POP server “pop3.live.com” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.

I use college wifi connection in which only port 80 and 443 is open. I this the reason why its not working.
Also I tried with sparrow and MS Outlook. None of them are working.

FYI I was on Lion and now on ML. Had the same problem in lion too
