Apple Mail on iPad downloading all messages

1 email account is setup on:

1 is on Macbook Pro
1 is on an iPad

Once this rarely used iPad was taken out of it's box - it started downloading all emails.

Now any time the iPad is turned on- it gets all the email - not the MBP.

But here is the annoying part: on the iPad there appears to be no
setting about "leaving messages on server". I really hate Apple sometimes....
